Bayer Leverkusen travel to Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday fresh from extending the contract of midfielder Lars Bender until 2019.
The Germany international signed a new deal with the Bundesliga club on Thursday to commit his future to the club until he is 30.
``Things have developed very positively here at Bayer Leverkusen and our team is strong with a lot of potential to get even better,'' Bender told his club's official website.
``I would like to be part of this story and make my contribution to us establishing ourselves permanently in the leading group.
``Bayer has become a big passion of mine and I really feel good at this club, and it's a great pleasure to play here.''
Leverkusen have so far shown this season that they have every chance of fulfilling Bender's desires, opening up a nine-point gap over fourth position while trailing the league leaders Bayern Munich by only a point after 10 games.
That record frightens Braunschweig coach Torsten Lieberknecht, who knows that his side will be up against it this weekend.
``Leverkusen are a brutally strong team,'' he said at a press conference. ``They are a team who, particularly on the counter-attack, are capable of capitalising on even the slightest of mistakes.
``We're going to have to be wide awake and our aim will be to keep a clean sheet for as long as possible, or if possible, for the entire game.''
While Leverkusen have lost only once this season, Braunschweig have only managed to win one game, further illustrating the difference between the two sides.
``Bayern Munich may be in a league of their own, but I think Leverkusen can challenge them for the title,'' Lieberknecht added.
``They are looking more solid than last season and aren't going to be dislodged from where they are now.''
