Newcastle vs Man City Premier League St James' Park 12 Janember 2014 – Kickoff time 15:00 GMT
That's how it feels to me with Manchester City at the moment, with star artists having been assembled from all over the world and encouraged to perform with style and freedom by Manuel Pellegrini - a ringmaster who brings a touch more pizzazz than his predecessor Roberto Mancini.  That is to take nothing away from the Italian, whose work in winning City's first trophies for over 35 years was essential towards what we're seeing now.

Six goals against West Ham on Wednesday took the City total to 92 from 31 games played this season. Half of those have come in the last 14 games, and with results and goals now coming easily away from home too it's obvious why Pellegrini's team is the tip of so many to win not just the Premier League but maybe one or two more pots as well.

You can forgive Newcastle fans for being a touch less enthusiastic about what they might witness this weekend. The Magpies could lose four games in a row for the first time in just over a year , and have been beaten by City in their last nine meetings in all competitions.

Naturally I blame myself. Since hailing Alan Pardew as my manager of the first half of the season, Newcastle have lost every game!

They've also lost Fabricio Coloccini to a knee injury for the next few weeks, and Newcastle without their captain are - like the visitors without Vincent Kompany - noticeably weaker in defence.

Without him they did manage to shut City out until extra time in October's Capital One Cup tie at St James' Park - but that was against a line-up vastly different to the one they'll most likely face this time.

Expect Newcastle to err on the side of caution, try to attack on the break and play it like an away side. Expect Manchester City to win.

Roma vs Genoa Italy Serie A Stadio Olimpico 12 Janember 2014 – Kickoff time 15:00 GMT
Both sides had contrasting results in their last match coming into this match. AS Roma suffered their first defeat of the season going down to Juventus 3-0 in their last match and now find themselves behind Juventus by some eight points in the standings. That defeat came after a 4-0 home demolition of botton side Catania, so they will be hoping that they can get back to winning ways with their home form.

The defeat against Juventus saw Roma had players such as Daniele De Rossi and Leandro Castan received red cards as goals from Arturo Vidal and Leonardo Bonucci as well as a Mirko Vucinic penalty saw Roma would lose their porud unbeaten rrecord and get off 2014 in the worst possible start.

However, after the game Coach Rudi Garcia defended his side by saying their objective was never to win the Scudetto this season. He was qouted as saying: “The Scudetto isn’t over, but it isn’t our goal, our aim is to get back into Europe.”

Meanwhile, Genoa comes into this match after beating Sassuolo 2-0 and saw them moved up to ninth in the standings. Alberto Gilardino converted a 28th minute penalty, with Andrea Bertolacci scoring just before half time to give them all three points.

After the match ended Coach Gian Piero Gasperini had said he had hoped hi side were more ruthless in front of goal despite saying he thought they deserved the win. He was quoted as saying; “We can improve on our handling of the result, as we had several opportunities to kill off the game.”

Roma starts this match as favourites but it waits to be seen how the absence of De Rossi and Leandro Castan will affect them in this match as Genoa will be coming looking for a point at least.
For the record, last season Roma won this fixture by 3-1.

Roma:
De Sanctis; Dodo, Burdisso, Benatia, Maicon; Strootman, Nainggolan, Pjanic, Totti; Ljajic, Gervinho

Genoa:

Cagliari vs Juventus Italy Serie A Spotland 12 Janember 2014 – Kickoff time 15:00 GMT
Juventus have the longest winning run of the 2013-14 Serie A season in their sights as they prepare to visit Cagliari on Sunday.

The Bianconeri currently share that record with Roma, who kicked off the season with 10 straight victories, but a 3-0 triumph over the men from the Italian capital last weekend has teed them up to surpass that marker.

Antonio Conte's men have not been short of goals during their winning streak, netting an average of 2.6 per match, and success against the Giallorossi put the reigning champions eight points clear at the top of the table.

However, Juve will be wary heading into this tie as Cagliari held the Turin outfit to a 1-1 draw when the sides last met in May.

Victor Ibarbo put Cagliari ahead at Juventus Stadium, before Mirko Vucinic spared the hosts' blushes just after the hour mark.

That said, the head-to-head record between these clubs reads in favour of Juve, who have not tasted defeat in the last seven Serie A meetings.

The Sardinians currently sit 12th and have carved out a reputation as draw specialists in recent weeks, with five of their last six games finishing all-square.

Cagliari's last defeat came more than two months ago, when they went down 2-1 at Hellas Verona on November 3.

Juventus will be without the suspended Andrea Barzagli for the trip to Cagliari, while Nene is expected to miss out for the hosts.
Cagliari (4-3-1-2): Antonio Adàn; Francesco Pisano, Luca Rossettini, Davide Astori, Nicola Murru; Daniele Dessena, Daniele Conti, Albin Ekdal; Andrea Cossu; Mauricio Pinilla, Victor Ibarbo

Juventus (3-5-2): Gianluigi Buffon; Martín Cáceres, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini; Stephan Lichtsteiner, Arturo Vidal, Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba, Kwadwo Asamoah; Carlos Tévez, Fernando Llorente

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has been sent for warm weather training to help quicken his recovery from a groin injury.Jonny Evans is a fitness doubt, having been substituted with a back injury in the midweek defeat by Sunderland.Swansea boss Michael Laudrup is without wingers Pablo Hernandez and Roland Lamah due to hamstring and abductor problems respectively.Goalkeeper Michael Vorm is not yet ready to return from a knee operation.
"Your job now is to stand by our new manager. That is important."
They were almost the last words from Sir Alex Ferguson to the millions across the world who claim Manchester United as their team. Those words were cheered by the throngs at Old Trafford who were celebrating yet another title and who reacted to Ferguson's challenge as though they were taking part in some mass pledge of loyalty. Some Manchester United fans have kept to their word, some have not. Football is a fickle business and no club or manager should take loyalty for granted.
Certainly nobody at Old Trafford last May could have expected that loyalty to be tested so severely and so soon.
However, surely the least that David Moyes deserves is to be allowed to build his own team and be judged on that? Ferguson, always a master of timing, picked a good moment to leave; his towering achievements undiminished by having to oversee the decline of his team.
United have too many average players in their ranks, too many good players who are playing averagely, and arguably their only two still world-class talents injured. It's a noxious recipe for defeat on the pitch and dismay in the stands.
The all-important stat to avoid for United and Moyes is to lose a fourth successive match for the first time since 1961.
Swansea's FA Cup win at United last weekend was only their third success in their last 17 games in league and cup. Michael Laudrup's men have struggled with the sheer volume of games being thrown at them this season.
Despite that, a mid-table finish along with a decent Europa League campaign is still very much in their sights and although that might lack the wow factor of last season it would still represent a very good season indeed.
Back-to-back wins at Old Trafford would only further enhance Laudrup's already remarkable CV and increase the urgency for United to bite the bullet and buy big in January.

Head-to-head
Swansea City's win in last Sunday's FA Cup clash was their first-ever triumph at Manchester United. The Swans had previously played at Old Trafford 10 times, drawing two and losing eight.
Swansea have not beaten United in the league since a 2-0 home victory in January 1982 and have failed to beat the Red Devils in any of their previous five Premier League matches.

Manchester United

David Moyes' side have lost four of their last six home games in all competitions.
United have only lost four home matches in a Premier League season once previously - in 2001-02, when they suffered six defeats.
The Red Devils have scored more than one goal in just one of their last seven games at Old Trafford (3-1 v West Ham).
No team has won the English title after losing six of their opening 20 games since Ipswich in 1961-62.
Manchester United have taken only five points in games against current top-eight opposition.
Wayne Rooney has been booked seven times this season in the league, more than any other player. He has moved into the top 10 of most booked players in Premier League history with 79 in total.

Swansea
The Swans have won just five of their 20 league matches this season.
They are without a win in their last six top-flight fixtures.
They are one of only four sides, along with Manchester United, Tottenham and Aston Villa to have won more matches away than at home this season.
However, they have only won one of their last seven away league games (W1, D2, L4).
Michael Laudrup's side have the highest average possession (59.6%) and best average pass completion rate (86.5%) this season.
Wilfried Bony scored the winner in the FA Cup victory over Man United last weekend, but the striker's six Premier League goals have all come at the Liberty Stadium.

Tottenham's injury crisis shows no sign of abating and Tim Sherwood is still without a host of first-team regulars.Jan Vertonghen and Younes Kaboul are not yet ready to return, while Erik Lamela, Sandro, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lewis Holtby and Paulinho are all absent.
Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis has a number of his squad carrying minor injuries and requiring fitness tests ahead of this match.
Cameron Jerome could return after missing the FA Cup win over West Brom.
Much has changed for both these clubs since the opening weekend of the season when they met at Selhurst Park, with Tottenham recording a 1-0 victory thanks to a penalty from debutant Roberto Soldado.
The main difference is that both have different managers from five months ago, with Tony Pulis now at Palace and Tim Sherwood taking charge at White Hart Lane.
The new Tottenham boss has had an excellent unbeaten start in the Premier League, with 10 points from his four games in charge, including a 2-1 win at Manchester United on New Year's Day.
Spurs have scored nine goals in those four league games, although they have gone out of both domestic cup competitions since the departure of Andre Villas-Boas.
Crystal Palace have scored just 13 Premier League goals in total this season, but six of those have come in their last seven matches and significantly they have tightened up at the back since the arrival of Pulis.
So will Crystal Palace come to White Hart Lane and, in the words of Jose Mourinho, "park the bus" in front of goal?
Certainly, Tottenham may have the majority of possession this weekend, and if they wanted a rehearsal for how to break a team down, Spurs got it in their last home match.
Stoke proved to be obdurate opposition a fortnight ago when I commentated at the Lane for Match of the Day. Tottenham eventually recorded a 3-0 victory but had to rely on a penalty from Soldado to break the deadlock.

Head-to-head
Tottenham's win on the opening day of the season was only their third victory over Palace in nine Premier League encounters.
Palace have never lost against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in the Premier League (W1, D3).
Both teams finished last season on 72 points and finished fifth in their respective leagues. Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League after 38 matches, while Palace were fifth in the Championship following their 46 games.
In 36 matches against Tottenham, Palace have won just seven times.

Tottenham
Spurs have picked up 15 points from 10 matches at home this season, scoring just 11 goals in those games.
They have won three more league matches away than they have at White Hart Lane this campaign.
After seven clean sheets in their opening 10 league matches of the season they have kept just one in their subsequent 10.
They have lost just one of their last seven league matches.
Aaron Lennon, Andros Townsend, Lewis Holtby and Gylfi Sigurdsson have yet to provide an assist in the Premier League this season.

Crystal Palace
They have won just one of their last five league matches.
Palace have taken 10 points from their eight league matches under Tony Pulis (W3, D1, L4).
After conceding 21 goals in their opening 10 matches of the season and keeping no clean sheets, they have let in just eight goals in their last 10 and have kept five clean sheets.
Mile Jedinak has made more interceptions (67) than any other Premier League player this season.
In Premier League history, only five teams have scored fewer than Palace's 13 goals through their first 20 games of the season.

Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc could make a comeback after a six-week absence with a fractured hand.Dani Osvaldo and Victor Wanyama are absent, but Gaston Ramirez and Rickie Lambert are expected to be passed fit.West Brom caretaker head coach Keith Downing, who takes charge for the last time before handing over to Pepe Mel, will be without defender Billy Jones.
Goran Popov is also out, while Youssouf Mulumbu and Victor Anichebe are back in training but unlikely to feature.
So West Brom have finally settled on their man, but when the news was confirmed on Thursday evening I couldn't help but think they'd gone round in a big circle before ending up almost where they'd started.
Pepe Mel had been the favourite earlier in the process, but the club appeared to rule him out a couple of weeks ago over differences surrounding the appointment of his backroom staff.
It seems everyone has had second thoughts though and the new Spanish coach will now work alongside Keith Downing and Dean Kiely as he begins his 18-month contract. Mel, who guided Real Betis to seventh place and Europa League qualification last season, will be at St Mary's but only as a spectator. Keith Downing, who's steadied the ship in the month since Steve Clarke's sacking, will take the team for one final time.
The club decided to make a change on 14 December after a run of four straight defeats and just one win in 10, but they're unbeaten in the league under Downing, with a win and three draws.
If this weekend's game is anything like last season's, Albion's new head coach will be greatly encouraged. They won 3-0 at St Mary's last April in an entertaining match that also saw referee Robert Madley correctly show three red cards on his Premier League debut.
Southampton, who according to their manager are missing out on some decisions this season because they're too nice, ended up with only nine on the pitch by the final whistle.
Gaston Ramirez and Danny Fox were both shown straight reds, along with the visitors' Marc-Antoine Fortune.
Southampton are on a poor run of results with just one win in the last nine and have suffered from both a tough schedule overall in recent weeks and some defensive errors, certainly in the match I saw at home to Spurs.
They were as high as third at the start of November but have dropped to ninth. A top-four finish was always unrealistic but they're better than the recent run suggests and their four goals against Burnley in the FA Cup should have helped bolster confidence ahead of this one.

Head-to-head
Southampton's win over West Brom on the opening day of this season was only their second in their last nine matches against the Baggies.
This is the 70th meeting between the sides. Southampton have won 25 times, West Brom 22 and there have been 22 draws.

Southampton
Southampton are without a clean sheet in five home league matches, having kept four in a row in September and October.
Despite their reputation as a neat passing team, statistically they play more long balls per game (an average of 70) than any other side in the Premier League.
Their players have been caught offside 63 times this season, more than other side.
Adam Lallana has been dispossessed 48 times this campaign, more than any other player in the division, while Jay Rodriguez has lost the ball due to a poor touch more times (52) than any other.

West Brom
Their win over Newcastle on New Year's Day was their first in 10 Premier League games.
It was also the first time they had kept a clean sheet in that period.
They have picked up more points against sides currently in the top half of the table (11) than they have against bottom-half sides (10).
Claudio Yacob has made more tackles (73) than any other player in the Premier League this season.

Fulham are likely to be without defender Brede Hangeland because of an ongoing sciatic nerve problem.Netherlands international goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg could return after a four-game absence with an ankle injury.Sunderland have no new injury concerns despite being in midweek League Cup action against Manchester United.
Gus Poyet is without long-term absentees Carlos Cuellar (thigh) and Kieren Westwood (shoulder).
Having commentated on Fulham's second-half capitulation at Hull City over Christmas, I had them down as relegation certainties.
That day in East Yorkshire they were spineless in defence and toothless in attack, a combination that could only have one outcome. But significantly that day they were missing Scott Parker and Dimitar Berbatov, while the back four had a makeshift feel to it.
Keeping Parker fit and just keeping Berbatov will be pivotal in their hopes of survival. There's bound to be interest in the Bulgarian during the transfer window but in selling him, Fulham risk losing their chief asset in the bid to remain in the Premier League. Looking at Rene Meulensteen's squad I firmly believe there's enough quality in it to avoid the drop - just! Recent results support that judgement as either side of the horror at Hull, they beat Norwich and West Ham.
Now they face another fellow struggler, knowing victory would put further distance between themselves and the bottom three.
Although still anchored to the foot of the table, Sunderland should make the trip south in confident mood. On Tuesday they wrote another chapter in their remarkable Capital One Cup story and their 2-1 first-leg success in their semi-final against Manchester United leaves them tantalisingly close to Wembley.
Many on Wearside fear a repeat of 1985 when Sunderland combined an appearance in the League Cup final with relegation from the top flight, but it need not end that way.
Gus Poyet's team have cobbled together a reasonable run recently on the road. They're unbeaten in their last four games, finally securing their first away win of the season at Everton on Boxing Day. A repeat of last season's 3-1 victory at Craven Cottage would bring even greater celebration.
This will be the fourth time I've covered Sunderland this season and I've yet to commentate on a goal by them! But with Fulham's leaky defence that should change this weekend.
Whether they'll return north with all the points is another question and might well depend on the fitness of Parker and the mood of Berbatov.

Head-to-head
Fulham won the last meeting between the clubs at the Stadium of Light, Pajtim Kasami scoring the only goal.
Sunderland were victorious at Craven Cottage last season, winning 3-1 in one of only four successes away from home last season.
The Cottagers have won eight of 19 Premier League encounters, with four victories for the Black Cats.

Fulham
Fulham's 42 goals conceded this season is the most of any Premier League team.
The Cottagers have conceded the first goal in a league-high 15 games but have fought back to win three games from losing positions, the joint second best record.
They have not drawn a Premier League match in 16 fixtures since a 1-1 draw with West Brom on 14 September.
Dimitar Berbatov has scored nine goals in his last nine league appearances in January.

Sunderland
Sunderland are unbeaten in their last four away matches in the league, their best run since a six-game streak between August-November 1999.
They remain the only team in the bottom eight not to have won a game against another side currently in that section of the Premier League table.
The Wearsiders have scored only five goals on their travels this season, one-third of their entire league tally.
Gus Poyet's side have won just once in the top flight on the back of their four Capital One Cup ties this season.
Lee Cattermole has scored just four career league goals, one of which came against Fulham while at Middlesbrough in August 2007.
