PAOK Salonika (Greece)The Greeks had nothing to lose coming into this tie against Schalke after being reinstated in the competition despite their 1-3 loss to Metalist Kharkiv in the third qualifying round.
POAK made the most of this opportunity and took control over the tie thanks to a 73th minute equalizer from Miroslav Stoch at the Gelsenkirchen stadium in Germany last week.
They will now try to preserve their lead during the 90 minutes at the end of which PAOK Salonika could celebrate their first ever presence in the UCL group stages.
Huub Stevens rested half his regulars on matchday two of the Greek Super League, which proved to be a costly decision as PAOK slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Panaitolikos. It’s a result that’s bad for morale, but Stevens took a calculated risk resting so many regulars, the upcoming match is way more important.
Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen (Germany)Schalke 04 is also coming into this match on the back of a defeat, their second in three games in the German Bundesliga. The side based in Gelsenkirchen only picked up a point so far, in a 3-3 home draw against Hamburg.
Schalke’s only goal in the 2-1 defeat against Hannover was scored by Huntelaar’s replacement, Hungarian international Adam Szalai who’ll also be among the starters in Greece since the Dutch striker is still recovering from an injury.
Bad news just keep on coming for coach Jans Keller, he lost winger Jefferson Farfan for the game against Hannover (wasn’t even on the bench) after the Peruvian picked up an injury in the first leg against PAOK, so it’s safe to assume he won’t be fit to play in Greece either.
Stats are on their side though, the Germans were unbeaten in their four away matches in the 2012/13 UCL, a run that included a 2-1 victory over Olympiacos in Greece. POAK’s coach Huub Stevens was in charge at Schalke 04 back then.
Greek
side PAOK Salonika were originally penciled in for a Europa League
spot, though have been given a shot at qualifying for the Champions
League after Metalist Kharkiv were disqualified amidst match-fixing
allegations. PAOK travel to Gelsenkirchen to play Schalke in the first
leg of their Champions League playoff on Wednesday, hoping to qualify
for the group stages for the first time in their history.
It's a match of particular significance for PAOK's Dutch coach Huub
Stevens, who was appointed earlier this summer after being sacked by
Schalke. PAOK, who finished second in the Greek Superleague last season,
are without new attacking midfield signing Zvonimir Vukić, veteran
defensive midfielder Pablo Gabriel García and young defenders Dimitris
Konstantinidis and Stelios Pozatzidis for the trip, with all having been
left out of Stevens' squad.
Jens Keller's Schalke, who suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to
Wolfsburg in their last Bundesliga match, are clear favourites to take
victory, though could play a rotated team. They're without long-term
casualties Chinedu Obasi, Anthony Annan and Kyriakos Papadopoulos, while
star striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar suffered a knee injury against
Wolfsburg and is unavailable. Ádám Szalai is expected to start.

Greek
side PAOK Salonika were originally penciled in for a Europa League
spot, though have been given a shot at qualifying for the Champions
