This film follows the lovely, naive Mary's descent into darkness. Unfortuanlty this is literally what it does. Mary has a hell of a few bad days, then descends into darkness; roll credits.
Watching her journey is a bit like watching a sex education film. Interesting stuff is going on but you are not part of it and you just have to sit watching uncomfortably until it is over.
The acting, script, lighting etc. is all good. Katharine gives a stella performance, easily pulling off sweet, sexy and sinister, but it is not enough.
There is initially an intriguing insight into a sub culture of people who want to express themselves through physical modification. But all the members of this culture turn out to be stupid, weak or cruel.
Not much gore but there are some disturbing scenes.This has all the right ingredient but is non-engaging and dull.

Movie Plot:
Nine years after the conclusion of Before Sunset, Jesse and Celine live in Paris as a couple, parents to twin girls conceived when they got together. Jesse is also struggling to maintain his relationship with his teenage son, Hank, who lives in Chicago with Jesse’s (now) ex-wife and who, after spending the summer with Jesse and Celine on a Greek island, is being dropped off at the airport to fly home. Jesse has continued to find success as a novelist, while Celine is at a career crossroads, considering a job in government.

Before Midnight is a different type of animal this time around. I didn't expect the team could top an already beautiful story but what they achieve in the newest installment is the most accurate and authentic portrayals of love since Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). The film is an absolute marvel, showcasing the very best dialogue and capturing the sheer essence of acting brilliance from stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Director Richard Linklater has also created the crowning work of his directorial career, showing incredible restraint and focus on two characters that still feel just as new and fresh as the day we met them. The film opens with a near fifteen minute take that gets its hook into you and never lets up. It's a cinematic sensation.
Midnight takes place nine years after the events of Sunset. Jesse and Céline are still together and have managed to have twin girls, Nina and Ella, and are living in Europe. The film takes place at the tail end of a six-week vacation in Greece where Jesse has just dropped off his thirteen-year-old son Hank, from his previous marriage, at the airport for his return back to Chicago. Realizing that he's missing the formative years of Hank's teenage life, Jesse and Céline explore the option of possibly making a move to America, leaving opportunities and a life in Europe behind.
This film is easily the best film of the franchise so far. Packing an emotional and euphoric punch like third-installments like Toy Story 3 (2010) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), films that have a close-nit relation to their predecessors but saving all the masterful speeches and epiphanies for the viewer to indulge in their finales. Obviously there's no big fantasy battle or a near death experience in an incinerator for the meaning of life to be physically explained but in the power of words, and words alone, Before Midnight manages to become the poster child for screen writing and brilliant storytelling for years to come. The film doesn't take any cheap shots with every scene constructed from real emotion and feeling incredibly authentic and genuine. There are long takes for the viewer to be present whether it's in an airport conversation between Jesse and Hank or at a lunch with in the beautiful valleys of Greece or even in a hotel room where a man and a woman share intimacy like older lovers typically do......

Gripping, intelligent psychological thriller

Throughout the years, the IRA and the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland have been a source of inspiration for countless British and Irish movies. What can 'Shadow Dancer' add to what we already know about this conflict? The answer is: nothing, really. This film isn't about the struggle for freedom, it isn't about catholics and protestants, it isn't even about right or wrong. It's only about suspense. This isn't a political movie, it's a thriller.
In fact, this movie could just as easily have been set in the context of the Italian mafia or a Mexican drugs gang. The story about a young female terrorist who, after a failed bombing attempt, becomes an informant for the authorities to escape a prison sentence, is extremely suspenseful. She lives in constant fear of being discovered, which would almost certainly lead to her execution. 'I am dead', she literally tells her contact at one point.
The film starts off with a clever flash-back, a very intense scene that explains her motivation to become a terrorist. The rest of the film is told in chronological order, with the suspense rising gradually, until the unexpected and dramatic climax.
In a subplot, we see that the British secret service is subject to the same sort of internal discussions, infighting and ego-tripping as the IRA. Clive Owen and Gillian Anderson (nice to see her again!) are fine as secret service persons, but the best acting is done by Andrea Riseborouh as the proud and independent terrorist Collette McVeigh.
The film is also excellent in recreating the atmosphere of the catholic working class neighbourhoods in Belfast (actually, it is shot in Dublin), where terrorism in the 1990's was a part of everyday life. Director James Marsh uses faded colours in many scenes to recreate the rundown streets and interiors.

Suddenly, he starts to have second thoughts on taking his life.

Movie Review:
Oh, but for the redemptive power of love. Nik Amir Mustapha takes this lesson and spins an engrossing meditation about people who have had life beaten right out of them with not only one, but two stories. Nik Amir's "KIL" is basically a dark romantic comedy that manages to end up being a genuinely moving product despite taking some cheap shots at manipulating the audience's feelings in between.
The film opens with Akil (Redza Minhat) attempting to commit suicide by connecting a hose to his car's exhaust pipe into his car to suffocate himself, only to stumble out of the car not long after. The scene establishes the premise of the film: Akil is a depressed and suicidal young man, but he just cannot seem to bring himself to let himself die. Even an attempt to jump off the rooftop of his apartment ends up with him persuading another suicidal tenant to live as a breakup is not reason enough to die.
Akil later finds the solution to his troubles in the form of a flyer for Life Action Bureau a.k.a. LAB, a company whose job is to help miserable people end their pain. Akil signs up for their services and eagerly waits to meet his maker, only to meet Zara (Cristina Suzanne) instead. He discovers that Zara lives in the same apartment block as him, and not long after, Akil is falling fast for her, which leads him to doubt his initial desire to die but LAB is bent on taking his life.

"KIL" is indie cinema through and through. The cinematography aims to create as artistic a shot as possible, leading to the use of smoke, still long shots or close-ups of the characters staring off into the distance accompanied by negative space and shots of subjects partially obscured. The soundtrack of the film seems to be have been composed by Bon Iver and Mumford & Sons (the theme song for "KIL" is by Pesawat, a local indie rock band), featuring mainly piano and guitar. On text, these elements make the film sound pretentious, but Nik Amir steers with a delicate intimacy and maturity that wholly mesmerizes; every shot a gorgeous composition that serves the actors and story to great effect, every song accompaniment heightens the experience. Although a lot of footage is recycled, like the fake film by Johan Iskandar (Hasnul Rahmat) and Akil's memories of Zara, considering the shoestring budget that the film was made on, they feel less like a tonally jarring mess, than a demonstration of how to make the best of what you have.
The connection between Akil and Zara grows stronger over the course of the film, and it is clear as daylight that the two are gradually falling in love. There are plenty of awkward moments mediated by quick-witted responses and a comedy of manners between the two, as well as some farcical elements like the news reporter harassing Johan Iskandar. Redza in particular turns in one of the best performances of his career. The scenes where he is alone, Redza communicates an array of emotions using only his face and body language that cuts deeper and more effective than words. Conversely, Cristina is less impressive in that aspect as his leading lady. Some of her actions and speech feel stiff, as she is trying them out for the first time, but she plays Zara with enough conviction and sincerity that fills her out as more than a complicating plot device.
However, great as the film is, it does have its flaws. The plot, while it does not follow a fairly predictable path, ends up raising more questions than answering them. For example, what could LAB have possibly hoped to achieve when they resorted to such extreme actions? Given the revelation at the end, what if a victim welcomes death instead? Further, Akil's sudden change of mind about his death is influenced by the unrelated appearance of Zara, so what exactly did LAB do? There is so much potential for "KIL" to be a truly affecting meditation on life and death, suicide and depression, but unfortunately the film decides to stay on the safe side.

The French director is certainly finding ways to trafficking in the fun, borderline absurd type of entertainment he learned while making movies with Luc Besson. This is the kind of cast that could pull in a wide audience, and there's room right now in the summer-release calendar for an unexpected hit.

Magic and Character development were lacking, but surprises entertained

It is very important to realize that this movie must not be spoiled. I will not be discussing anything not shown in the trailers, and I ask you not to go looking for such secrets online, but only by watching it yourself. This movie is designed to entertain, and to a degree it does just that.
I haven't seen many of Leterrier's films, but I enjoyed this about as much as The Incredible Hulk, but more than Clash of the Titans. There were still disappointments. Magic movies have been a great interest of mine, and from the trailer I had to wonder, does Michael Caine + woman in a tank = The Prestige? Truthfully, the similarities stopped there, including magic's screen time.
Despite magic taking up most of the trailers, it was too scarce in the film itself. I wanted more magic. I know that doing so would take screen time from Ruffalo, but he wasn't the best of the bunch. In fact, they were Freeman, Caine, and Laurent, respectively.
The screen writing didn't allow for many to develop character well. The Four Horsemen were usually smooth-talking brick walls. And was that Dave Franco I saw? He had no screen time! (except for brief fancy dodging falling fighting)
These character holes would be acceptable if the movie were a large show. But as mentioned before, magic only came in smaller pieces, when at all. Some were amazing, some were old already, and some were hilarious.
It seems like I didn't appreciate the movie much, but I could only talk about what I didn't like. The rest, the secrets, I loved but can't talk about. Suffice it to say that many surprises are in store, and they're worth watching the movie for. That said, it's best to go in without guessing and predicting, because seeing the many reveals is where most of the entertainment lies. Don't spoil it for yourself.....

Storyline:
