Bundesliga Review: Stuttgart, Köln, Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim battered by title contenders

Bayern continues to lead the way on goal difference in the Bundesliga. None of the four teams which are contenders for the salad bowl dropped points this week.Schalke was on the verge of losing their connection with the top four. Lukas Podolski struck in the fourth minute and Köln took the lead into half-time. Köln actually held on till the hour mark but Schalke found a way. An unlikely source in the form of Ciprian Marica scored the equalizer. Then, Schalke started compounding misery on Köln.

Marica grabbed a second 12 minutes later. Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored from the penalty spot just six minutes after the second goal. Benjamin Höger added one more just four minutes after the third. Now, that is what you call an ‘attacking force’. While their Ruhr rivals aren’t exactly scoring for fun, they are scoring quite a few too.Dortmund has had their difficulties with Hoffenheim in the past. Last season, they picked up only a single point from two games against the Sinsheim club. On Saturday, Dortmund showed no mercy once more and banged in three past Tom Starke. However, they were also greeted with news this week that Mario Goetze will be out for at-least eight weeks. There was also good news for the BVB fans. Juergen Klopp and Michael Zorc, the duo of coach and sporting director, extended their contracts. If Klopp sees out his contract, fans will be seeing him jumping around and yelling on the Dortmund touchline for up to 2016......

Should Leverkusen stick with Robin Dutt?

Should Leverkusen stick with Robin Dutt?

soccer news, football news, football articles, football articles

Disappointment after disappointment; draw after draw- Leverkusen fans are perhaps slightly sickened by their beloved club’s results at the moment. Leverkusen has been associated with one simple word for many seasons in the Bundesliga- ‘talent’. In terms of sheer raw talent, very few teams can get the better of Leverkusen. Currently, the title race in Germany is as close as ever with four teams challenging for the coveted shield- Leverkusen isn’t one of them.

In the previous two seasons, Leverkusen displayed that they were ready to challenge for the title. In the 2009-2010 season, Bayer 04 was the top side for much of the season before being overtaken by Bayern and eventually finishing fourth. Last season, they challenged for the title for much of the campaign and finished second behind Dortmund.Robin Dutt’s success with Freiburg convinced many that he could lead Leverkusen to the top four this season. Every week, Leverkusen seems to fall further and further away from the title challengers. Dutt’s side drew in some games they should have ideally lost.Against Hanover, prior to the winter break, they were lucky to have gotten a point out of the fixture. Against Bremen in the weekend, the scenario was a similar one. Leverkusen was restricted to shots from distance. Their goal came when a scuffle occurred in the penalty area though.Bremen had a very good chance to win the game but failed to do so. The Leverkusen defence has looked vulnerable on more than one occasion this season. The team’s attack hasn’t turned up at times this season. In some games, Leverkusen has displayed their true potential- those games have come few and far between.....

Can Real Madrid win La Liga this season?

Seven points ahead of Barcelona, Real Madrid is poised to win La Liga this season.Barca’s away-day blues is no secret- they have dropped 13 points away from home. With each point they have dropped, they have found Madrid ahead of them bit by bit. Barca has dropped points in seven matches so far this season. Real Madrid has dropped points in just three matches.

Jose Mourinho’s team has been outdoing other sides in style this season. With the exception of two blips at the beginning of the season, Madrid has won every game with the exception of the match against Barcelona. Madrid lost to Levante and drew with Real Sociedad in the other two games where they lost.Jose Mourinho is known to be a brilliant man-manager. When rumours of disagreement in the dressing room broke out, everyone was quite surprised. Mourinho however handled the situation brilliantly. Having been accused by Sergio Ramos of not knowing how to deal with matters as a player on the pitch, Mourinho decided to field a side which the players and perhaps the fans wanted against Athletic Bilbao.Having gone down a goal early on, Real Madrid came back to win 4-1. Yet, the jury was out on Mourinho. Matters would only be fixed if Mourinho managed to hurt Barcelona in the second leg of the Copa del Rey. Madrid came painfully close to a comeback against Barca. In fact, they would have won had a Ramos goal in the second half not been scandalously ruled out by the referee.....

The Copa del Rey semis kick off on Wednesday night for Valencia, as they welcome FC Barcelona at the Mestalla in the first leg of their fixture.Barcelona narrowly edged past Real Madrid in the quarter finals, using their 2-1 away victory to knock out their rivals 4-3 on aggregate. Conversely, Valencia enjoyed an easy qualification into the semis with a whopping 7-1 aggregate win over Levante.

Coincidentally, neither Los Che nor Los Cules were able to grab triumphs at the weekend in La Liga. Valencia shared a point away to Racing Santander following a 2-2 draw, while Barca were restricted to a goalless draw against Villarreal. Both sides sit comfortably in the Top 3 of La Liga, but their additional work in the Primera Division will have to be put on hold for the meantime. There seems to be some injury problems for Valencia coach Unai Emery, with Mehmet Topal and Ever Banega not likely to perform.Adil Rami and Miguel’s unstable form adds to the club’s worries. Barcelona will also be without Pedro and Iniesta, while Villa, Fontas and Afellay join the list of absentees.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Report

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Report

Copa del Rey champions Real Madrid are out of the competition. They lost 4-3 to Barcelona in the quarterfinals over the two legs.A couple of glorious opportunities fell to Higuain but the Argentine failed to take them. Barcelona finally punished Pipita and team mates through late first-half goals from Pedro and Dani Alves. At the break, it seemed like Real Madrid had suddenly lost all hopes of reaching the Copa del Rey semifinals.

However, their approach in the second period showed the brave side of Los Blancos. Kaka and Higuain went off for Callejon and Benzema before Cristiano Ronaldo pulled a goal back in the 68th minute. Substitute Benzema did what Higuain couldn’t do as he leveled the match at 2-2.In the end, Real Madrid should found immense confidence and pride from this game. Kaka and Mesut Özil were influential in midfield. Cristiano Ronaldo had a great match and produced a complete performance. Chances were created but more should have been taken. In terms of controversy, Sergio Ramos' goal was strangely disallowed for an alleged foul on Dani Alves in the buildup. Real Madrid got three genuine appeals for a penalty turned down while Lassana Diarra surely should have been sent off in the first period of the game. Sergio Ramos received a controversial red card in the very last moment only to distract Real Madrid’s fight for a dramatic winner in El Clasico. What kind of show will football fans witness when Barcelona and Real Madrid will meet at the Camp Nou again in La Liga? Watch out for the next Clasico...

Arsenal de Sarandi take a giant step towards the group stage of the Copa Libertadores after thumping Sport Huancayo on Tuesday.Arsenal de Sarandi of Argentina practically assured themselves of a place in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores after crushing Sport Huancayo of Peru 3-0 in the first leg of the preliminary round of South America's biggest club competition on Tuesday.

The Argentine club proved far too strong for their opponents, after claiming a comprehensive victory at the Julio H. Grondona stadium in Avellaneda, despite playing with a man less for the last 25 minutes of the game.Meanwhile, in Tuesday's other game El Nacional of Ecuador edged closer towards the group stage of the competition, after claiming a tight 1-0 victory over Paraguay's Libertad in Quito. Despite the advantage, the tie is still up for the taking for either of the two sides.

soccer news, football news, football articles, football articles

In the Premier League, these two teams are worlds apart; however, in the Carling Cup, it is the underdog who holds the advantage.Liverpool is a team of multiple facades. On one hand, the top sides don’t fancy facing them as Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea would testify. On the other hand, the smaller sides always fancy their chances against them as Bolton proved against them.

Liverpool can play wonderful fast-paced football as they showed last season in their thrashings of Fulham and City. Liverpool can also defend doggedly as they showed in the first leg of the Carling Cup. They kept a potent City attack out for the entire ninety minutes while bagging one at the other end themselves.Manchester City beat Tottenham Hotspur in a hotly contested match this weekend. The match was as controversial as Arsene Wenger’s decision to substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain against Manchester United if not more. Joleon Lescott and Mario Balotelli should have earned reds for serious foul-play.Balotelli was given a four-match ban by the English FA and rightfully so for the mark he left on Scott Parker. He will thus be unavailable for this match. Liverpool’s Jay Spearing will most likely be unavailable due to injury.Liverpool lost to Bolton 3-1 this week. Liverpool hasn’t even reached double figures in terms of Premier League wins this season and lies seventh in the table, a full 19 points behind City. City got the better of them this season in the League. Liverpool was battered 3-0 in that game, a result that is still fresh in the minds of players......

Ronaldinho will aim to inspire Flamengo to victory when they travel to Bolivia to take on Real Potosi in search of passage into the group stage of the Copa Libertadores. Flamengo, Brazil's most popular club with an estimated fan base of over 36 million, will be hoping to move closer towards gaining entry into the group stage of the 2012 Copa Libertadores when they clash with Real Potosi of Bolivia on Wednesday.

The Brazilians face a tricky task, as while on paper they appear to be much stronger than the locals, what could make things all that more difficult is playing at almost 4,000 metre above sea level, a climate which Brazilian teams have struggled to deal with in the past.In Wednesday's other two Copa Libertadores first round fixtures, Union Espanola of Chile take on Tigres UANL of Mexico and Internacional of Brazil face Once Caldas of Colombia in a tie that could go either way.Former winners Inter and Once Caldas have found wide success in the competition in recent years, but unfortunately one of the two sides will have to bow out at the first hurdle.

Barcelona have a great advantage ahead of the second leg of their Copa del Rey tie with Real Madrid. They’ll have home crowd support but could these hot quotes impact their chances negatively?Three-time footballer of the year Lionel Messi is being targeted in a way or another ahead of Wednesday’s huge Clasico a the Camp Nou. What effect will these pre-match quotes have on Messi and the rest of Barcelona’s invincible squad?

1) Karim Benzema to AS
According to Benzema, the mighty Catalans of Barcelona have a weakness. What is it?“We have to be much more efficient when trying to score goals from set pieces because I think that is one of the parts of their game which is more fragile. In dog fights, they are not strong, we must seize the opportunity.”

2) Pepe via Real Madrid’s official website
When the word “if” draws angry reaction…“With regard to the play involving Leo Messi, it was an involuntary act. But even still, if Messi is offended, I apologise as I was only intending on defending my team.”How many people actually believe Pepe when he says that he didn’t stamp on Lionel Messi’s hand on purpose?

3) Jose Mourinho to the press
For Barcelona fans out there, here is what Jose Mourinho had to say:“But he [Pepe] has said it was not intentional and I believe him. If any of you think he is a liar, say it. Let's not make this a never-ending story“I didn't see you last season doubting a player who made racist remarks and said he didn't. Everyone believed it was true, even Uefa. Now Pepe says it wasn't intentional [and nobody believes him].”

4) Brazilian legend Pele to Le Monde
“When Messi has scored 1,283 goals and won three World Cups, then we will talk. People ask me all the time when there will be a new Pele. I tell them: 'Never'. My parents shut down the factory.”Someone apparently thinks that dazzling on almost every Clasico stage is of little importance…

Their relationship evolves from heartless enemies to caring brothers as the show progresses, and the drama that ensues from the brothers' romances with female characters and from the basketball atmosphere are significant elements within the series. The first four seasons of the show focus on the main characters' lives through their high school years. With the beginning of the fifth season, Schwahn advanced the timeline by four years to show their lives after college, and he made it jump a further fourteen months from the end of the sixth to the start of the seventh season. The opening credits were originally accompanied by the song "I Don't Want to Be" by Gavin DeGraw. The theme was removed from the opening in the fifth season; Schwahn said that this was to lower production costs, to add more time for the storyline, and because he felt that the song was more representative of the core characters' adolescent past than their present maturity. The credits then consisted only of the title written on a black background. The theme was restored for season 8, in response to audience demand, and was sung by different artists each week. The series premiered to 2.5 million viewers and rose to 3.3 million in its second week, becoming one of only three shows to rise in their second episode during the 2003–2004 television season. Their characters (Lucas and Peyton) had been two of the five main protagonists, and had provided one of its central love stories, throughout the show.On May 17, 2011, The CW renewed One Tree Hill for a ninth and final season, placing an order for 13 episodes.Bethany Joy Galeotti and Sophia Bush are signed as full-time regulars for one final season, and James Lafferty will appear as a part-time regular.Chad Michael Murray will return for a special appearance during the final season, which will premiere on January 11th, 2012.

Dropping Cristiano Ronaldo & 3 things Real Madrid must do to beat Barca at home

Dropping Cristiano Ronaldo & 3 things Real Madrid must do to beat Barca at home
By Angela Asante, January 16 2012,

soccer news, football news, football articles, football articles

Real Madrid want to defend their Spanish Copa del Rey title at all cost. To make this wish a reality, they might need to follow the three rules mentioned in this article. For Real Madrid, like for all clubs these days, beating Barcelona is a phenomenon. Joseph Guardiola’s Catalans have grown so mighty that opponents tremble in fear at the thought of facing them. Some downplay panic, but the outcome remains the same; Barcelona maintain their dominance at the end of the day.

Manchester United, AC Milan and Santos are some of the world’s top teams that have bowed down to the unrivalled power of the Blaugrana. It’s probably right to say that Real Madrid know even more suffering than Santos, Milan or 2009 and 2011 Champions League beaten finalists United. The routine of El Clasicos tells it all.Since defeating Barcelona 4-1 in 2008, Real Madrid have managed only one victory against the Catalans. It occurred in the final of the Spanish Copa del Rey in April last year. A 103rd minute goal from Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo made the difference as Xavi, Lionel Messi and David Villa ran out of tonic. Madridistas described the victory as the beginning of a new era for Los Blancos and as the end of Barcelona’s dominance in Clasicos. Time and results, however, proved otherwise.Despite being in formidable form ahead of December 10’s meeting, Real Madrid exploded like a balloon against the sword of Barcelona. Karim Benzema offered the home crowd a great start to the show but the Catalans replied with 3 goals to spoil Real Madrid’s night at the Santiago Bernabeu. In addition, many of Los Blancos’ remarkable records went broken on December 10, 2011.For the first time since then, Real Madrid and Barcelona will clash. The venue for this two-legged Copa del Rey tie is the Santiago Bernabeu, where the hosts are normally invincible against every opponent but Barca. If Real Madrid want to successfully defend their Spanish cup title, they have to overcome the Catalans. To do that, they will need to take full advantage of the home factor so as to enter into the second leg with confidence and realistic hope.....

Braga scored a crucial win over Sporting on Sunday night to leapfrog their rivals from Lisbon and move up into 3rd in the table - the last place giving access to next season's Champions League. There was little goalmouth action in the first half, with Rui Patrício's save from Marcio Mossoró the closest either side came to breaking the dealock.

The second half started with a bang as Sporting midfielder Matias Fernández was unlucky to see his shot cannon back off the post.Braga took the lead shortly afterwards as Hélder Barbosa got on the end of a Lima pass and opened the scoring.Lima himself scored Braga's second in the 64th minute, capitalising on a mistake by Sporting centre-back Alberto Rodriguez. The visitors gave themselves hope of taking something from the game when Carrillo pulled a goal back on 74 minutes, but Braga held on without much difficulty to secure all three points.....

After dominating their opponents at the beginning of the match, Penarol finally went ahead in the 28th minute when Albin dribbled past two Palestino defenders before beating goalkeeper Felipe Nunez with a well-placed shot from the edge of the area.Ten minutes later Penarol were awarded a penalty, and up stepped an inspired Albin to double their advantage with a perfectly-placed shot.Penarol continued to dominate their opponents after the interval, with Silva scoring their third goal in the 49th minute when he finished off a spectacular collective move that involved five Penarol players. But two minutes later Canales pulled a goal back for Palestino, when he slotted home from a swift attack. However, Silva restored Penarol's advantage in the 63rd minute when he slotted the ball home after receiving a brilliant pass from Facundo Guichon, who had rushed forward on a powerful run. With three minutes remaining on the clock, the visitors scored a consolation goal when striker Llanos met a smart cut back with a powerful shot.....

The first Clasico of 2012 takes place on January 18th as the two big spanish clubs clash prematurely in the 2011-12 Copa Del Rey quarter-finals.Global eyes will once again be on the two spanish giants as Real Madrid and FC Barcelona clash once again in the Quarter-Finals of the 2011-12 Copa del Rey.

The first of the two quarter-final legs takes place in Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 4:00PM (EST). FC Barcelona will be looking to redeem themselves after losing this competition to Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final last year. They will also be looking to make a bold statement about their title aspirations since they find themselves 5 points behind Los Blancos in the La Liga championship. This match comes at a critical time when both teams are underpeforming as was proven this weekend by unconvincing displays by both teams. Jose Mourinho was able to overturn his side's title threatening 1-0 deficit in Mallorca late in the game. Whereas Pep Guardiola's side fought hard to overcome a 2-2 score late in their game against Real Betis, which happened to be the only goals conceded at the Camp Nou in the current La Liga competition this season. The Cules were able to return to business as usual at the Camp Nou by winning 4-2 later on in the game. For all the latest information about El Clasico TV Schedules, match previews, stats and insights, tune into LiveSoccerTV.com.

Uruguayan hitman Edinson Cavani rescues Napoli from defeat with a late penalty conversion against Bologna on Monday.Napoli needed a second half spot-kick from Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani to rescue a 1-1 draw against lowly Bologna at the San Paolo stadium in the closure of the 18th round of the Italian Serie A on Monday night.

Roberto Aquafresca gave the visitors a surprise lead in the 14th minute, when he met a penetrating through ball from midfielder Nico Pulzetti with a straightforward finish. After conceding the goal, Napoli took command against a Bologna side that seemed content to sit back and absorb heavy pressure from the Napoli attack. Goran Pandev came closest to equalising for Napoli in the first half, with a curling effort that flew inches over the crossbar. In the second period the hosts continued to search for a goal, but they were mainly restricted to long-distance attempts on goal. Salvatore Aronica came close to scoring with a thunderbolt, but his effort was saved by an alert Jean-Francois Gillet in the Bologna goal.It seemed that there was no way through for Napoli, until the 71st minute when they were awarded a penalty after a shot from Gokhan Inler was handled by Uruguayan midfielder Diego Perez. Perez's Uruguay team-mate Cavani stepped up to the spot and made no mistake for his eleventh goal of the season. The goal sparked the Azzurri to life, but although they searched for a winner at all costs, it was the visitors who came closest to snatching the three points, with former Juventus striker Marco Di Vaio missing two glorious opportunities. With the result, Napoli remain in sixth position of the Serie A, with 28 points, five points from the Champions League qualification zone. Meanwhile, Bologna climbed into 16th place with 19 points, four points clear of the relegation zone.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona Match Preview

Real Madrid vs Barcelona Match Preview
by Angela Asante, Jan 16th 2012

Once again, the Santiago Bernabeu will be set to flames. It’s the first leg of the Copa del Rey’s Real Madrid-Barcelona tie on Wednesday, January 18. You just can’t miss it!Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance in the latest Clasico was so appalling that many fans and pundits, non-Madridistas and Madridistas alike, suggested that the player gets benched in the next Barcelona meeting. However, this is very like not to happen. What every Real Madrid supporter can now hope is for Ronaldo to live up to expectations at the Bernabeu.

With the absence of the injured Sami Khedira, Jose Mourinho could use Pepe in midfield to mark the untouchable three-time world player of the year, Lionel Messi. This tactic actually worked in the first leg of last season’s Champions League semifinal tie. It only collapsed when the referee dismissed the Portuguese defender for a challenge he never committed on Dani Alves.“Whether I'll play in midfield again? The coach will know what to do against Barcelona. I'm always available to help Madrid,” Pepe told AS concerning the possibility of being deployed as a midfielder come Wednesday.“Everyone knows what my qualities are and what I can do for the team. The coach is the one who makes the decisions though.”In defense, Alvaro Arbeloa will be missing. The Spaniard has to serve a one-match ban in the Spanish Copa del Rey for receiving a yellow card against Malaga in the previous round. Real Madrid appealed against the decision without success.Jose Mourinho has been urged to start with Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain and Özil against Barcelona. The good news for Real Madrid is that Angel di Maria has been deemed fit to make his return after missing so many matches lately. The Argentine’s place in Mourinho’s starting XI is yet to be confirmed as competition against Jose Callejon exists.Either way, the inclusion of both players in the roster would give more options to the coach. It’s important for Real Madrid to possess a strong bench against Barcelona as the super-sub factor could influence the game.Meanwhile, the visitors are preparing to do what they know best. All eyes will be on reigning Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi. He has been tipped to put Casillas in trouble once again. If Barcelona score at least one goal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, they’ll be even more favorites to reach the semifinals of the Copa del Rey.After all, everyone is aware about the mesmerizing impact of the Camp Nou stadium. Pique believes that there are no favorites ahead of Wednesday night’s Copa del Rey quarterfinal first leg match between Real Madrid and Barcelona. How true is the defender’s opinion?

A look at Real Madrid and Barcelona’s previous results in the 2011/12 Spanish Copa del Rey:

Round of 32:

- Ponferradina 0-2 Real Madrid; Real Madrid 5-1 Ponferradina (7-1 to Real Madrid on aggregate)

- L’Hospitalet 0-1 Barcelona; Barcelona 9-0 L’Hospitalet (10-0 to Barcelona on aggregate)

Round of 16:

- Real Madrid 3-2 Malaga; Malaga 0-1 Real Madrid (4-2 to Real Madrid on aggregate)

- Barcelona 4-0 Osasuna; Osasuna 1-2 Barcelona (6-1 to Barcelona on aggregate)

What’s next for Real Madrid and for Barcelona in the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey? Where will each team stand ahead of the second leg in Catalonia?

The Swedish scoring-machine expressed his frustration for the negative tactics employed by their city rivals on Sunday.AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic slammed arch-rivals Inter Milan for their defensive-minded approach to the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday.

Inter escaped from the San Siro with a valuable 1-0 victory courtesy of a second-half strike from Argentine goal-poacher Diego Milito, but it was Milan who dominated great part of the match, even if they lacked imagination when it came down to creating goal-scoring opportunities."We didn't have a good match, because we couldn't get many shots on target," a clearly disappointed Ibrahimovic admitted to reporters."We always had the ball at our feet, but we couldn't manage to be dangerous with it. I believe that Inter stepped onto the field with the sole purpose to defend. They waited for a mistake of ours to hit us on the counter-attack."However, Ibrahimovic, who played well below his potential during the derby, looked on the bright side as the Italian champions still hold a five-point cushion over their city rivals after 18 rounds of the competition."We may have lost, but we are still five points ahead of Inter on the table. I don't consider this match to be decisive, many more will come."The key to this match was that Inter defended well, while we didn't play well in attack," concluded the Swedish striker.Ibrahimovic, who played for Inter between 2006 and 2009, has scored twelve goals in Serie A this season.

Aston Villa, sign Los Angeles Galaxy, striker Robbie Keane, on a six-week, loan deal,

Aston Villa have signed Los Angeles Galaxy and Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane on loan until 25 February, subject to Fifa clearance."This is only short term, of course," said the much-travelled ex-Coventry, Leeds, Spurs and Liverpool striker.

"But there has been a lot of speculation over the years linking my name to Villa and, finally, I'm here."Keane, 31, who has already been training with Villa, could make his debut at home to Everton on Saturday.Dubliner Keane, who started his career with Wolverhampton Wanderers as a 17-year-old, admitted: "I'm delighted to be back in the Premier League."I'm excited about it and I know I'll really enjoy my time here. It's only for two months, but I will do my absolute best."Villa are a great club, a club with a massive tradition and standing in the game. Villa Park is one of the finest stadiums I've ever played in."I've been training with the players here for the past few days and it's been great but I'm not naive enough to think I'll just walk straight into the team."The Republic of Ireland striker came close to joining Villa in 1999 from Wolves, only for a late hitch over the transfer fee allowing Coventry to sign him instead. It is also a case of second time lucky for McLeish regarding the capture of Keane.....

Manchester City, boss Roberto Mancini, is involved, in an ,angry tunnel exchange, with Liverpool, captain Steven Gerrard, after his side's 1-0 Carling Cup, semi-final, first leg defeat,

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini was involved in an angry tunnel exchange with Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard after his side's 1-0 Carling Cup semi-final first leg defeat.Mancini felt a Glen Johnson tackle on Joleon Lescott should have been punished for being two-footed, claiming it was worse than the challenge that resulted in a red card for Vincent Kompany in Sunday's FA Cup tie with Manchester United.

But Gerrard disagreed and made his feelings known to Mancini. While Mancini was waiting to talk to a gathering of journalists, Gerrard approached him.The Liverpool captain, pointing a finger at the City boss then waving an imaginary card, said to Mancini: "You say to the press that Wayne Rooney tried to get Kompany sent off - and you try to get Johnson sent off."While listening to him, Mancini said "I say what I want" and "yes, yes" but what he was agreeing with was unclear.Gerrard then shook his head, turned around and walked away, then Mancini shouted back at him but what he actually said cannot be understood."Gerrard came to me and said I said something," commented the Italian, who clashed twice with the England international."Steven Gerrard can say what he wants. I said what I think. That is what I am used to doing. It is not important what Gerrard or the other players have said."Mancini claimed that his anger was directed at the inconsistency of refereeing decisions more than at Liverpool defender Johnson."I said something [after the tackle]," he said. "It was not for Johnson. It is for the tackle. This tackle was worse than Vinny's. Everyone can see it."When asked if he agreed with Mancini's view on Johnson's challenge on Lescott, Gerrard told BBC Sport: "I don't think so. It was a clear winner of a tackle......

Real Madrid have already booked their place in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals and Barcelona are an inch away from joining them in the Last 8. Will there be a pair of Clasicos this month? Most likely, yes… Barcelona won their first leg encounter in the on-going stage 4-0 against Los Rojillos. That result places them in perfect position to eye two meetings against arch-rivals Real Madrid in the following round.

If ever Osasuna wish to overturn their opening leg’s score line, then they will have to keep a clean sheet this evening and score at least 5 goals. Should they concede a goal, their mission will be made harder, and being realistic; success on their behalf is not very possible at this stage. For Barcelona, a terribly shocking exit would remind them of their disgusting disqualification from the Copa del Rey almost five years ago, when they got overpowered by Getafe on aggregate despite a 5-2 victory at the Camp Nou. This is not something Barca fans are currently anticipating; but then, they should hence prepare themselves to face Madrid twice this month.Seven Clasicos were lined-up last year in La Liga, the Copa del Rey final, the UEFA Champions League semi-finals and the Spanish Super Cup. If Barcelona and Madrid play each other again in January 2012, then they will be going through the 8th and 9th Clasicos since April 2011.Only a single Clasico last year went in favour of Real, with three others ending as wins for Los Cules. The last Clasico resulted in an exciting 3-1 triumph for Pep Guardiola’s boys.Is the Spanish derby about to lose its value due to its excessive repetitions lately, or is it getting better and better?

As the 2011/12 English Premier League season continues, leaders Manchester City are giving more reasons for Spurs to try their luck. The top three zone in the Premiership is not Tottenham Hotspur’s usual place – especially not during the second half of the campaign. The reality, this year, is that the London club can optimistically dream about lifting the prestigious trophy in May.

Of course, Spurs need long-term consistency to achieve such a feat. In addition, they have to fight against the historical and financial power of England’s top teams. These include Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City. The competition between the English Premier League’s top six contenders is tight – both in terms of points and mental strength. As things stand, City lead the way with 48 points – three above Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea (37), Arsenal (36) and Liverpool (34) are a bit further. But for these three clubs, the fight to avoid the Europa League and to gain Champions League tickets looks more like the real situation.Incredibly, Spurs seat above these big teams in third position. Since it shouldn’t hurt to dream about winning the EPL crown, Harry Redknapp and his men should just enjoy the challenge without worrying about what tomorrow may bring.“Nothing is impossible. We are in the Champions League mix but you just don't know about the Premier League. I wouldn't put that pressure on players but they believe we've got a chance,” Redknapp told the press following his side’s vital 2-0 victory over Everton on Wednesday night.Tottenham Hotspur have absolutely nothing to lose. Looking at the way things have turned out very recently, the heat is firmly on Manchester City.

Prior to being named World Player of the Year for the third time 'La Pulga' received wide praise from his national team coach.Alejandro Sabella, the coach of the Argentine national team, praised Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi prior to being named FIFA World Player of the Year for the third consecutive year.

"I already knew that he was the best player in the world, but I was surprised when I had the opportunity to see him from up close, his change of rhythm to explosion, his technique [when running] at speed, how he controls the ball at that pace."He looks like that old game of Scalextric which we used when we were kids, those tiny cars that would start from zero right to full-speed," Sabella said to the official website of soccer's world governing body FIFA.Sabella, who replaced Sergio Batista as the coach of the Argentine national team at the conclusion of the 2011 Copa America, highlighted the fact that Messi has reached world-wide fame and super-stardom for his consistently sublime performances on the soccer field."What is most astonishing is what he represents. In India and in Bangladesh it was incredible," affirmed the coach, in reference to the attention Messi received from the locals in the two friendly matches which Argentina played in both Asian countries against Venezuela and Nigeria last year."In Venezuela and in Colombia it was also unbelievable, what he awakens in the people, the idolism, the fanaticism off the soccer field," concluded Sabella in relation to Messi, who only moments later went on to be crowned FIFA World Player of the Year for a third consecutive year in lopsided manner.

Despite his good form with the Citizens the controversial striker admitted that he has become increasingly homesick in England.Mario Balotelli admitted that if he were to leave Manchester City in the near future it would only be to return to his homeland Italy.

The controversial former Inter Milan attacker arrived in England in 2010, but although he has adapted nicely to the style of the Premier League he confessed that he has yet to make any friends in England and this makes living away from home all the more difficult."I'm 21 and have lived far from home for nearly two years now," Balotelli affirmed to L'Uomo Vogue. "I have adapted fairly well despite the clear [cultural] differences."But the truth is that I have no real friends here. If I had to move right now, I'd choose to move to Italy."Balotelli, who is often referred to as the 'bad boy' of Italian soccer, admitted that the exaggerative nature of the British press can be difficult to deal with, especially for a player of his reputation."If I buy a Fiat Uno, I would read that for a person like me it would have been more suitable to buy a Ferrari. If I choose to buy the Ferrari they would write that I should keep my feet on the ground and buy a Fiat Uno," a clearly frustrated Balotelli stated."If I laugh I'm not serious enough, but if I don't laugh, I'm not grateful for having the best job in the world. Here in England the press write about everything and always exaggerate," he concluded.Mario Balotelli has found the back of the net eight times for Manchester City in the English Premier League this season. The Citizens currently lead the competition with 48 points, three points more than city rivals Manchester United.

The Italian champions are the odds on favourites to secure the services of the explosive Argentine.Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez is likely to continue his career at AC Milan, after reports indicated that the controversial Argentine international rejected an offer to join Inter Milan in favour of their arch-rivals.

According to Calciomercato Tevez's agent "[Kia] Joorabchian said no to Marco Branca," the sporting director of Inter, who was in charge of negotiating the striker's possible transfer to the club.It also stated that "Tevez had shown his desire to play for Milan, alongside [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic," the Swedish striker, who recently admitted that if Tevez were to join Milan he would help him "score lots of goals with the Rossoneri jersey."The fact that Joorabchian put an end to all speculation circulating about Tevez moving to Inter Milan, leaves the door wide open for AC Milan. The Serie A champions are the favourites to land the talented Argentine, despite the fact that Manchester City are only willing to sell the player at the right price after investing big money with his purchase back in 2009.Tevez, 27, hasn't taken part in a competitive match for more than three months, since being punished by Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini for refusing to enter the field of play in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich in September. If Milan have their way, the Carlos Tevez saga could soon be over. But this depends on the willingness of Roberto Mancini and Manchester City.

The South American rivals will fight for supremacy in the latest edition of the 'Derby of the Americas' at the MetLife stadium. The Argentine Football Association confirmed on Tuesday that South American heavyweights Argentina and Brazil will lock horns in a high-profile friendly match in the United States on June 9.

Widely regarded as the biggest international derby in the world, the one-off match will be staged at a fitting venue: the impressive $1.6 billion 83,000-capacity MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The match will serve both sides as preparation for the 2014 World Cup, which will be held in Brazil. While Brazil have already qualified for the tournament as being the hosts, Argentina will have to fight it out during the South American World Cup qualifiers for a berth in the finals. The rivals met twice in the space of two weeks in 2011. On September 14 they played out a goalless stalemate in Cordoba and on September 28 Brazil claimed a 2-0 victory in Belem. Brazil's goals were converted by Lucas and Neymar. To add further spice to the encounter, once again both Neymar and Lionel Messi will be up against each other. For now Messi has the upper-hand over the youngster, after scoring a late winner as Argentina edged Brazil 1-0 in Doha in 2010. He also scored twice as Barcelona thrashed Neymar's Santos 4-0 in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup last December. In 92 encounters between Argentina and Brazil everything stands even, as both have won 34 matches each, with 24 draws. To further break down the derby, Argentina have scored five more goals than Brazil, with 144 compared to 139.The AFA also confirmed that Argentina will clash with Saudi Arabia in Riyadh on November 14. The last time the sides met was back in 1992, with Argentina picking up a 3-1 win.

The Libyans will be looking to put their country’s political problems behind them during the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Can Marcos Paqueta inspire the Mediterranean Knights to something positive this month?Libya’s best memory dates from 1982

Despite joining CAF as a member in 1965, Libya’s national team has tasted Nations Cup football only a few times. The 1982 African Cup of Nations marks, until now, the country’s greatest accomplishment on the continent.Having qualified as hosts of the tournament, the Mediterranean Knights had the honour to compete against the likes of African powerhouses Ghana, Tunisia and Cameroon. The Libyans claimed strong results. They went that close to upsetting the Black Stars but Opoku Nti’s late goal cancelled out Fawzi Al-Esawi’s strike as the game ended 2-2. Libya snatched a 2-0 win over Tunisia at the 11 June Stadium on Matchday 2, then did just enough against Cameroon to claim the top spot in Group A.In the semi-finals, the Mediterranean Knights staged a comeback to oust Zambia on a 2-1 score line. The Libyans faced Ghana again in the final.Alhassan put the Black Stars into the lead and Beshari helped Libya retaliate 20 minutes from time. However, the game remained 1-1 as a penalty shoot out was needed to declare the winners. Libya lost 7-6 in a dramatic end to the 2982 AFCON.For many different reasons, the Libyan national team only returned to the Nations Cup’s scene in 2006. This time, they drew Cote d’Ivoire, Morocco and host country Egypt.

Real Madrid played with 10 men but still went through at the expense of Malaga. In the biggest surprise, Jose Mourinho opted for a 4-3-3 formation instead of his usual 4-2-3-1 format. Karim Benzema started from the bench as Kaka joined Cristiano Ronaldo and Higuain on the frontline.

For Malaga, Van Nistelrooy led the attack as a lone striker.
The match produced too much physical confrontation as both sides had an equal chance of going in front before the break. The scoreboard, however, displayed a 0-0 result at half time. With the introduction of Mesut Özil and Marcelo in replacement of Khedira and Kaka respectively, Mourinho made his intentions clear: Los Blancos were going to push forward a bit more while keeping their eyes open in defense.Still, nothing seemed to click for the visitors until Benzema stepped onto the field. The Frenchman quickly made effect as his 72nd goal won the match for Real Madrid.

Watch out for El Clasico in the Copa del Rey next up.

Real Madrid: Casillas; Arbeloa, Pepe, Ramos, Coentrao; Khedira, Xabi Alonso, Lass; Kaka, Cristiano, Higuain.

Malaga: Caballero; Sergio Sanchez, Demichelis, Mathijsen, Monreal; Cazorla, Toulalan; Seba, Eliseu, Isco; Van Nistelrooy.

Hernanes sends Lazio into the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia with a spectacular stoppage-time free-kick against Verona.Lazio scraped into the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia after surviving a two-goal fight-back from Hellas Verona to claim a dramatic 3-2 victory thanks to a superb free-kick from Brazilian midfielder Hernanes in second half stoppage-time.Having come from a 4-0 defeat to Siena in the Serie A on Saturday, Lazio were looking to rebound against the second-division club. Despite creating several clear-cut opportunities to go ahead throughout the half they had to wait until the stroke of half-time to break the deadlock, when Brazilian defender Andre Dias tapped home a Cristian Ledesma corner-kick.It seemed that the match had been settled when Tommaso Rocchi doubled Lazio's lead in the 58th minute when his drive took a wild deflection off Giuseppe Pugliese before finding itself in the back of the net. However, Verona had different ideas and quite incredibly drew the match level within the space of thirteen minutes, courtesy of well-taken goals from Emanuele Berrettoni and Marco D'Alessandro in the 61st and 74th minutes.Lazio were clearly shell-shocked after conceding the equaliser, and would have gone behind had Verona defender Matteo Abbate not blasted the ball into the side-netting when he had the goal at his mercy. But there was a final twist in the tale, as Hernanes sent Lazio into the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia with a spectacular curling free-kick right at the conclusion of the match to the delight of the home fans at the Stadio Olimpico. The Brazilian celebrated the goal with an impressive acrobatic performance.Lazio's opponents in the quarter-finals will be the winners of the tie between AC Milan and Novara, which takes place at the San Siro next week.

Manchester United have announced that the former England midfielder Paul Scholes has come out of retirement and will play until the end of the season. He will sit on the bench for this afternoon's FA Cup third-round match against Manchester City.A statement on the club's official website said: "Paul Scholes has rejoined the playing staff at Manchester United for the remainder of the season with immediate effect, after approaching Sir Alex Ferguson to reverse his decision, made at the end of last season, to retire.

"He has gone straight on to the bench for this afternoon's FA Cup third-round tie against Manchester City."Ferguson, United's manager, said: "It's fantastic that Paul has made this decision. It's always sad to see great players end their careers, but especially so when they do it early. The last time Manchester City faced Manchester United, the derby produced a total of 7 goals – 6 for the Citizens and a single one for the Red Devils.“That’s in the past, now. It’s gone for us but it’s also gone for them because they have produced some great form since,” goalkeeper Joe Hart said according to Manchester City’s official website.

The English shot stopper is preparing for Sunday’s big showdown against Manchester United in the FA Cup. Hart is fresh from a terrific encounter against Liverpool which ended 3-0 for his side. The Citizens have the backing of their proud supporters to defeat Manchester United yet again. The Red Devils are actually in emergency mode after losing twice on the trot in the English Premier League. Among various predictions from football fans and pundits, Manchester City have been tipped to sink Ferguson’s men in more troubles. The atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium is high but despite being pleased, Joe Hart has urged his team mates not to get carried away.“It’s nice for the fans to have those memories and to have the bragging rights, but for the players, it has gone, and we move on to Sunday and another big game,” he continued.“They owe us one, but that’s for them to feel and not our concern. We have to focus on our own game and we want to win every match we play regardless of the competition because if you win games you win trophies, and that is what we are all about.”Manchester City triumphed over Manchester United last season, when both teams locked horns in the semifinals of the FA Cup. The Citizens eventually sealed their campaign on a glorious note at the expense of Stoke City in the final. Now, they are facing the prospect of a very early exit. Their only option is to overcome Manchester United’s Red Devils on home soil.

The Uruguayan goal-poacher could return to Argentina with defending champions Boca Juniors. The agent of Santiago Silva, Pablo Betancourt, discarded any possibilities of the Uruguayan striker returning to Velez Sarsfield, opening the door for a future transfer to Argentine Apertura champions Boca Juniors.

"We spoke with Velez, we reunited with them, but they couldn't buy out his contract. Now we can negotiate with other teams," the agent explained to TyC Sports on Friday.Betancourt stated that if Boca want to purchase the striker first they would have to ask for the collaboration of the AFA so that the regulation would permit the Uruguayan to be eligible to play for three clubs in the space of a year."Knowing Boca, they won't have any problems. If they really want him, they will get him," affirmed the agent, who added "any player would like" to wear the Boca Juniors jersey.Meanwhile, Julio Cesar Falcioni, the coach of Boca, also referred to Silva on Friday, as well as the other possible strikers that could reinforce his squad for the upcoming 2012 Copa Libertadores and the Argentine Clausura championship."The president knows the interest we have for Silva. We know that it is very difficult, but there are legal possibilities to bring him here, and lawyers are working on this," Falcioni told ESPN Radio Rivadavia."Hopefully we can bring everyone, but whoever comes would be to my liking. But neither have I put a deadline for my number nine to arrive," he concluded.Santiago Silva has great possibilities of joining Boca Juniors this season, after a miserable spell in Fiorentina, where he has only scored a single goal since his arrival in August....

Manchester City have been urged by their avid fans to punish Ferguson’s Manchester United on Sunday in the FA Cup.The Citizens are entering this weekend’s clash with high hopes and confidence, following their recent 3-0 demolition of Liverpool. The Red Devils, meanwhile, are carrying two consecutive victories on their back.

They lost a 5-goal thriller against Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Eve before surprisingly falling 3-0 away to Newcastle United. Consequently, Manchester City opened a 3-point advantage over their local rivals and coach Roberto Mancini presumes that Alex Ferguson is struggling to face reality.“It’s difficult to say your neighbours play the best football. It’s hard. But I think until now we’ve played the best football in the Premier League,” the Italian told reporters.“In every city where there are two teams, the rivalry is very intense. Rome, Milan, everywhere it’s very strong. [AC] Milan were at the top for many years, winning the Champions League and the championship. For Inter this was very, very difficult because Milan won everything.”Pursuing the explanation of his opinion, Manchester City’s Mancini added:“Here we have the same situation. It’s clear Manchester City don’t have the same history [of winning as many trophies as United].“But when you arrive and start to build a new team, a strong team, and afterwards it becomes as strong as the other team, for me it’s the same.....

Liverpool cruised into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 5-1 win over Oldham Athletic on Friday.Kenny Dalglish will no doubt be pleased with the performance of his players on te field, but the idiotic actions of one fan have again damaged the club's reputation.

On the field, Oldham threatened to produce a famous giant killing performance when an outstanding Robbie Simpson strike gave the Latics a 28th minute lead. That lead did not last long however, as Craig Bellamy and Steven Gerrard scored to give Liverpool a 2-1 half-time lead.Jonjo Shelvey put Liverpool 3-1 up during the second half, before Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing struck late to put a gloss on the score line.Oldham surprised the Anfield crowd by flying out of the blocks and created three early chances. Manchester City loanee Luca Scapuzzi fired wide when presented with a good chance, before leading goal scorer Shefki Kuqi fired into the side netting after a powerful run.Norwich City loanee Tom Adeyemi then headed over the bar, before Simpson gave Oldham a shock lead with a wonder-strike. After being set up by James Wesolowski 30 yards out, Simpson hammered a thunderbolt strike past Pepe Reina to send the visiting fans into raptures. The joy did not last long for Oldham, as Welsh striker Bellamy brought Liverpool level within less than two minutes. Shelvey carved out space to shoot, and Bellamy deflected the ball past Oldham keeper Alex Cisak.Just as the teams looked to be going into half-time locked at 1-1, Maxi Rodriguez was fouled in the 18-yard area by Adeyemi, and Liverpool were awarded a penalty. Captain Gerrard stepped up to confidently convert the spot kick and give the Reds a half-time lead.
