Liverpool V Aston Villa live Stream Premier League- Preview 18th Jan 2014

Fit-again Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is expected to start after making a goalscoring return from injury as a substitute against Stoke. Joe Allen and Mamadou Sakho return to the squad after both missing three matches because of injury.
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert could give debuts to new loan signings Grant Holt and Ryan Bertrand.
Defender Nathan Baker will not feature after suffering concussion against Arsenal on Monday.
Brendan Rodgers seems to have caused a stir with comments this week that he "will never give up the fight" for the Premier League title.
With his team sitting in the fourth place that is their first aim, only six points off the top, and without the extra European missions of those above them - I'd have thought there'd have been a bigger story if the manager of Liverpool HAD dismissed the prospect of aiming higher. After a 100% start to 2014 you can forgive Rodgers for feeling bullish, especially now that the Suarez-Sturridge partnership is together for the first time since November.
If the goals stop flying in for Luis Suarez (a huge IF the way he's going!) then Daniel Sturridge is back to resume bagging his fair share.
The only problem with Rodgers' confident claims might be in the timing ahead of this fixture.
It's only coincidence of course, but in the days leading up to Villa's visit to Anfield last season, Rodgers had again spoken of his ambitions to "grow higher" than a top-four finish. Then, as now, Liverpool went into the game having won three games in a row (two in the league).
Villa had only won one of their previous six league matches, but triumphed 3-1 to give first notice that Paul Lambert's plans to build a new team based on youth might work.
Thirteen months on and with current form of one win from seven games, I think it's fair to say that it's not worked as well or as quickly as hoped.
The signing of Grant Holt on loan from Wigan this week might not have excited many Villa fans, but the experience and strength he'll bring can't hurt.
The flags will be out, with Liverpool's principal owner John W Henry reported to be attending a match at Anfield for the first time since appointing Rodgers. Yes, I had to read that a few times too.

Head-to-head
The home side has not won any of the last five fixtures between these clubs.
Aston Villa have lost just one of their last four matches at Anfield.
This is the 186th meeting between the sides. Liverpool have won 91, Aston Villa 55 and there have been 39 draws.

Liverpool
Liverpool have scored 51 goals in the Premier League this season, four more than they managed in 2011-12. This equals their top-flight record after 21 matches, which they set in 1987-88 - when they won the league.
The Reds have scored four or more goals in six Premier League matches this season, a total matched only by Manchester City.
Luis Suarez's tally of 22 league goals (in 16 games) is unsurpassed by nine Premier League clubs this season.
His goals account for 43% of Liverpool's league total this season.
No team has conceded fewer home goals (six) than Liverpool this season in the Premier League (level with Man City and Arsenal).
Steven Gerrard has scored 11 Premier League goals against Aston Villa, more than against any other side. He scored in both league matches last season.

Aston Villa
Villa have won almost double the number of points away from home (15) than at Villa Park (eight).
Christian Benteke scored three goals against Liverpool in the Premier League last season, more than any other player managed against the Reds.
Benteke's goal against Arsenal on Monday was his first for 14 hours and 45 minutes. Nonetheless, his record of five league goals in his first 16 appearances this season is identical to the 2012-13 campaign, in which he went on to score another 14 goals in 18 matches.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce must decide whether to start fit-again striker Andy Carroll against his former club after his cameo against Cardiff last weekend. James Collins and Ricardo Vaz Te are available but Guy Demel and Winston Reid are injured, while James Tomkins and Kevin Nolan serve suspensions. Newcastle United are still without captain Fabricio Coloccini due to a knee injury.
Full-back Mathieu Debuchy serves the final game of a three-match ban.
West Ham's win at Cardiff last Saturday was quite a surprise at the end of a week in which they had conceded 11 goals in two cup matches without reply. Whether it's a turning point in their season is impossible to say, but the return of Andy Carroll could be. His presence on the field and the psychological boost to the whole club can only help, but just as it seemed daft to build their transfer strategy solely around him last summer, it would be unfair to expect too much immediately on his return.
We're set to see Carroll make his first appearance at Upton Park since last season and it's a game he'll be desperate to do well in with his former club in town.
Carroll isn't the only one who's got history with the opposition this weekend. West Ham's captain, Kevin Nolan, also used to play for Newcastle but he'll miss the game through suspension.
Alan Pardew will also understand what Sam Allardyce is going through at the moment after previously managing West Ham himself. Pardew took them to the FA Cup final, where they narrowly lost to Liverpool, but was sacked in 2006.
Allardyce suffered a similar fate at St James's Park after a spell in charge during which they never fell in love with either him or his methods.
West Ham's win over Cardiff was their first in eight league matches and especially timely given their predicament and the difficult trip to Chelsea that follows this game.
Newcastle were left stewing over the 'goal' that wasn't given against Manchester City last week and they travel south on the back of three straight defeats without scoring. A win here would be their first since Boxing Day.
It could be tight. Two of the last three matches between the sides have ended goalless, with West Ham winning the other by a single goal at St James' last season, scored by the currently suspended Nolan.

Head-to-head
The Hammers were the only side that managed to keep a clean sheet both home and away against Newcastle United in the Premier League last season - they also managed one in the 0-0 draw between the sides in August.
Newcastle have lost just one of their last seven matches at Upton Park.

West Ham United
West Ham's win over Cardiff was their first in eight league matches.
Their 2-0 win was only the sixth time in 21 league matches this season that they had scored more than two goals in a game.
They picked up their ninth clean sheet of the season (the joint highest in the top flight) against Cardiff, after previously conceding 22 goals in six matches in all competitions.
Carlton Cole has scored three times in his last five Premier League appearances.
The Hammers have lost 14 points from winning positions this season, more than any other team.

Newcastle United
After a run of one defeat in nine, Newcastle have lost their last three matches.
This the first time they have failed to score in three successive league games in the same season since they were relegated in 2008-09.
They have yet to draw an away game this season, having won five and lost five of their 10 fixtures so far. They only managed two away victories in the whole of last season.

Norwich manager Chris Hughton is expected to give a debut to new loan signing Jonas Gutierrez.
The Canaries are also boosted by the return of Anthony Pilkington and Alex Tettey after long spells on the sidelines.
Hull boss Steve Bruce is expected to have his two new signings, Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long, available for selection.
However, they are still without forward Sone Aluko and midfielder Robbie Brady.
Little cures a football fan's 'January blues' like the signing of not one - but two - new strikers. If it weren't for the sideshow of Hull's controversial re-naming bid, then Assem Allam would surely be the most popular man on Humberside.
The fans may not like the prospect of becoming 'Tigers' next season, but they can't really argue with how the owner has reached for his chequebook again to bring in Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long.
Neither player has been a regular starter for their old club this season and both represent something of a risk when you look at their recent goal tallies. Jelavic hadn't scored at all for Everton in nine appearances this campaign prior to netting twice in his final game for the club against QPR in the FA Cup. Long only scored in two of his 17 games for West Brom this season.
Norwich City know all about the risks of bringing in a new strike partnership. Despite a combined outlay of over £13m, Gary Hooper and Ricky van Wolfswinkel have only managed six Premier League goals between them this season.
Norwich City know all about the risks of bringing in a new strike partnership. Despite a combined outlay of over £13m, Gary Hooper and Ricky van Wolfswinkel have only managed six Premier League goals between them this season.
Van Wolfswinkel, especially, has been a disappointment so far. He got 45 goals over the previous two seasons at Sporting Lisbon, which was enough to earn a call-up to the Dutch national side. Since arriving in the Premier League, the forward has only managed a total of four shots on target.
I was at Goodison Park last weekend when Norwich were all perspiration and not enough inspiration as they were beaten 2-0. That was a sixth consecutive league game without a win, and the Canaries have managed just three goals in those six fixtures.
Hull really seemed to have turned a corner when they beat Fulham 6-0 just after Christmas, but their two league fixtures since have not been conducive to building momentum. They lost against two of the top four, in the shape of Liverpool and Chelsea.
The congested nature of the bottom half of the Premier League means that although Hull go into this weekend in the top 10, they are only six points above the foot of the table.
The outcome of this game could be huge for Norwich. A victory might lift them to mid-table, but defeat could - theoretically - see them bottom by the end of the weekend.

Head-to-head
Hull have only lost one of their last eight games against Norwich.
All but two of the last eight encounters have ended in 1-1 or 2-1 scorelines.
Hull beat Norwich 1-0 in August in what was their first-ever meeting in the top flight.
There has not been more than a total of three goals scored in a match between these sides in their last 23 encounters.

Norwich City
Norwich have not won at Carrow Road since beating Crystal Palace on 30 November.
The Canaries have only scored more than once in three of their 21 Premier League fixtures this season.
They have picked up just four points from a possible 33 against top-half opposition.
There have been fewer goals at Carrow Road (21) than any other Premier League stadium this season.
They are the only Premier League team yet to have a substitute score for them this season.

Hull City
No team has picked up fewer away points than Hull's five this season (level with Stoke).
Hull have never won a Premier League match in the month of January (D3, L6).
They have only scored more than one goal in four of their 21 matches this season.
The Tigers have attempted only 158 shots, fewer than any other team.

Manchester City's Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and David Silva are fit to face Cardiff despite missing the midweek FA Cup victory against Blackburn.Sergio Aguero scored on his return from a calf injury in that tie, but fellow forward Stevan Jovetic remains absent.
Cardiff are without injured pair Andrew Taylor and Jordon Mutch.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must decide whether to give first starts to new signings Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Mats Moller Daehli.
He was a Champions League-winning hero for Manchester United but it's impossible to see anything but heartache for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on his return to the city as his new Cardiff side tries to stop the Etihad Express.
Manchester City have the best home record in all Europe's top leagues - played 10, won 10, 38 goals scored, just six conceded. One more goal will take them to 100 for the season in all competitions. They have averaged 4.5 goals a game in their last 10 home matches. They seem unstoppable there.
Alvaro Negredo and Sergio Aguero have already reached 20 goals. Edin Dzeko needs five more and City will become the first top-flight side to have three players to hit 20 in the same season in all competitions since Liverpool with Kenny Dalglish, Terry McDermott and Ian Rush in 1981-82.
I know Cardiff beat them earlier in the season but that was when the newcomers were basking in the glory of promotion and before the split between chairman Vincent Tan and former boss Malky Mackay.
Solskjaer was never on the winning side in Manchester derbies and it would be one the greatest Premier League shocks of all time if the Welsh club ended their five game-run without a victory at the Etihad.
In fact, the Norwegian might fancy putting his boots back on. Cardiff's August hero Frazier Campbell has added only two more league goals to the brace he bundled past Joe Hart that famous afternoon, while the injured Jordon Mutch is on the same figure of four. They just don't look as they have anything like enough to trouble the home side.
But then who saw that defeat in Cardiff coming on 25 August? What if the excellent Yaya Toure does push forward once too often, leaving Fernandinho exposed, and Cardiff counter decisively? What if Craig Bellamy can roll back the years against his old club? Surely it can't happen?
It'll be a seventh consecutive league win for Manchester City, won't it? It's their title to lose, isn't it? The destination of the title will certainly be decided by games like this.

Head-to-head
Cardiff were 3-2 winners in the first top-flight meeting between the two clubs for 51 years last August.
Manchester City have never played Cardiff at the Etihad Stadium, but were unbeaten at Maine Road in seven league and cup matches between 1963 and 1985.

Manchester City
City are vying to register seven consecutive league wins for the first time since August 2012, when success against Southampton on the opening day extended a run of six straight victories at the end of the previous campaign.
It is two months since City lost a league game, away to Sunderland.
City have scored 99 goals in all competitions this season.
Manuel Pellegrini's side have scored almost four times as many goals (59) as Cardiff (15) in the Premier League.
They have scored a league-high five last-minute goals this season.

Cardiff City
Cardiff have only taken one point from their last five games (D1, L4)
Defeat for the Bluebirds would extend their winless run to six games - the first time they have endured such a sequence since March 2008.
Only Crystal Palace have failed to score on as many occasions as Cardiff City (11) this season.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer never won against City in four attempts as a player with Manchester United, although he did score once (D2, L2)

Yannick Bolasie faces a fitness test on a groin problem, while Kagisho Dikgacoi and Jerome Thomas are both out.
Stoke's Kenwyne Jones will not be involved as a result of his refusal to play against Liverpool last weekend.
New loan signing John Guidetti is in the squad and Oussama Assaidi returns after missing out last weekend under the terms of his loan deal.
Imagine the scenario when Tony Pulis was mulling over whether to become the new Crystal Palace manager. He presumably assessed the squad, had a look at what would be his first few matches should he accept the challenge, and then, surely, will have examined the rest of the season's fixtures for when Palace would meet Stoke.
That time is this weekend, when the man who took charge of Stoke in 464 matches in two spells at the club comes up against the Potters for the first time since leaving at the end of last season.
Pulis has said how much he is looking forward to facing a club he led with such distinction, but he desperately needs a win over his old side in what is his 200th game as a Premier League manager.
Palace slipped to bottom place in the Premier League after the 2-0 defeat at Tottenham last weekend, yet they are only five points behind Stoke in 12th.
Stoke's only away win this season came at West Ham way back at the end of August, but they have returned to Staffordshire with victories from their last two league matches at Selhurst Park - albeit in 2006 and 2007.
Cameron Jerome is ineligible to play against the club he is on loan from, so Dwight Gayle may well come into Palace's team.
The big question though, is who will take a penalty for Palace should they get one. If Gayle is on the pitch, I'd put plenty of money on it being him rather than Jason Puncheon!

Head-to-head
Stoke won 2-1 in the first-ever Premier League meeting between the sides back in August.
The Potters are unbeaten in their last three visits to Selhurst Park, including a 0-0 draw in the FA Cup last season.
Tony Pulis managed Stoke for 464 games in two spells in charge, winning 169, losing 165 and drawing 130.

Crystal Palace
Palace have won just one of their last six Premier League matches.
They have scored only seven goals from open play in the league; eight players in the division have more.
They have kept five clean sheets in their last 10 matches, conceding only 10 goals.
Mile Jedinak has made an average of 6.9 tackles/interceptions per match this season, the highest total in the Premier League.

Stoke City
Stoke conceded five goals in a top-flight match last weekend for the first time since March 1982. Both of those games were against Liverpool.
Peter Crouch scored Stoke's first headed goal of the season against Liverpool in what was their 21st fixture.
The Potters have conceded five penalties in the league this season, a joint high with Everton and Crystal Palace.
They have conceded a total of 14 goals in their last four Premier League games.

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Rosicky could play in a protective mask following surgery on the broken nose he suffered against Aston Villa on Monday.Nacho Monreal should be available despite a twisted ligament in his foot. Fulham pair Maarten Stekelenburg and Fernando Amorebieta are doubts with respective ankle and knee problems.
Captain Brede Hangeland will make his first league start since October after returning from back surgery in the midweek FA Cup win over Norwich.
Having notched four consecutive league victories since Christmas, Arsenal would seem to have little reason to fear a visit from Fulham.
After all, the Cottagers have never won a game at either Highbury or the Emirates. They have also conceded four goals to each of Everton, Manchester City and Sunderland and six to Hull in the space of the last month or so and have the fewest clean sheets and most goals conceded in the division.  So where can Fulham fans find a few vestiges of hope to cling to before they hop on the District Line?
Well, Fulham have drawn each of their last two games at Arsenal, and were leading in both. You may recall Mark Schwarzer's penalty save from Mikel Arteta last season which, with the last touch of the game, kept the score at 3-3 and left Arsene Wenger ashen-faced and agitated.
Fulham are also fresh from a morale-boosting FA Cup replay success over Norwich in which they scored three goals for the first time since October. Even better, their towering defensive alpha male, Brede Hangeland, was back in the team having spent almost three months on the sidelines nursing a bad back. I know how he feels.
Then there is Steve Sidwell. Who, Sidwell? Steve Sidwell? The ginger haired midfielder who sits in front of the back four breaking up opposition attacks? The 'wasn't quite good enough to make it at Arsenal and Chelsea' Sidwell? The guy who is solid and reliable, but functional and never flashy?
Yep, that's the one. That's the same Steve Sidwell who has just scored in three successive appearances for the first time since he was a twinkle in Reading's midfield a decade ago.
Throw in the laconic Dimitar Berbatov, who tends to raise himself to face the big clubs, the industrious Clint Dempsey, the ever-ready Scott Parker and a few Arsenal injuries and you have the makings of a bit of Fulham optimism.

Head-to-head
Arsenal have never lost at home to Fulham in any competition spanning 110 years (W22, D5).
However, Fulham earned a Premier League draw at the Emirates Stadium on each of their last two visits.

Arsenal
The Gunners are unbeaten in their subsequent nine home league matches since an opening-day defeat by Aston Villa, dropping just four points and conceding only three goals.
They have the joint best defensive record in the division, conceding 19 goals in 21 matches and keeping nine clean sheets.
Arsenal's total of 48 points after 21 matches is their highest since 2007-08 (50 points). They finished in third place that season.
No team has scored the first goal in more Premier League games this season than Arsenal (16).
Olivier Giroud has scored the opening goal on a league-high six occasions this season.

Fulham
Fulham have lost 14 of their first 21 top-flight matches in a season for the first time in their history.
They have conceded 46 league goals - 11 more than any other side in the division - and kept the fewest clean sheets (3).
The west London side have let in four goals or more in four of their last six league fixtures.
Steve Sidwell's goal against Sunderland last weekend was Fulham's seventh from a corner this season; a record matched only by Manchester City.
Darren Bent has scored seven goals in 11 Premier League appearances against Arsenal.

Sunderland V Southampton live Stream Premier League- Preview 18th Jan 2014

Sunderland have no new injury concerns, although goalkeeper Keiren Westwood could be out for around three months having undergone a shoulder operation. Gus Poyet is also still without defender Carlos Cuellar, who continues his recovery from a thigh problem.
Southampton forward Pablo Osvaldo remains unavailable as he completes a three-match ban.
Calum Chambers should recover in time from illness, but Victor Wanyama is not ready to return from injury.
Both of these clubs have been in the news in the last seven days, but for different reasons.
Sunderland made headlines on the pitch with their emphatic win at Fulham, a result which lifted them off the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, despite a return to winning ways, all the headlines at Southampton have been centred on events off the pitch following the departure of chairman Nicola Cortese.
This match falls a year to the day since Cortese raised a few eyebrows by appointing Mauricio Pochettino as manager. There's no doubting the strides the team and the club have since made.
The close relationship the manager enjoyed with the Italian was clear and the speculation about his future was understandable. Pochettino said this week that he will be in charge at least until the end of the season, but admitted the events that have unfolded have been a distraction.
Only this match and those in the coming weeks will show the level of that distraction. The much-needed stability that any football club thrives on has been taken away.
Their victory last time out against West Brom came after a run of just five points from 27, and at a time of reports of uncertainty behind the scenes.
Sunderland are all too aware of the need for solidity. Gus Poyet is their sixth boss in five years.
They have won their last three games in three different competitions and have only lost one of their last six in the Premier League. If they can record back-to-back league wins for the first time this season, confidence and belief will rise further.
The four goals at Fulham were a welcome boost but what is even more encouraging is the way they have tightened up at the back. They've kept five clean sheets in their last 11 matches and will need to avoid conceding soft goals to give them a chance of survival.
Sunderland's home matches will go a long way to determining their fate. You sense victory for either South American boss on Saturday would be sweet for very different reasons.

Head-to-head
Sunderland beat Southampton in the League Cup at the Stadium of Light earlier this season.
The Black Cats' last home league win against the Saints was in December 1999 - a 2-0 victory courtesy of two Kevin Phillips goals.
Both of Southampton's league and cup goals against Sunderland this season were scored in the 88th minute.

Sunderland
The Wearsiders have won their last three matches, all in different competitions.
Despite winning all six of their home cup ties this season, Sunderland are without a league win at the Stadium of Light since beating Manchester City in November (D1, L3).
The Black Cats have conceded as many goals at the Stadium of Light as they have on their travels (17).
They have let in 10 goals inside the last 15 minutes of their league games this season - only Fulham and Cardiff City (both 14) have a worse record.
Phil Bardsley has scored in his last two home appearances against Southampton.

Southampton
Saints won for only the second time in 10 Premier League matches at home to West Brom last weekend (W2, D2, L6).
Mauricio Pochettino's side have conceded 23 goals, the joint-third best record in the Premier League.
Dejan Lovren has played more minutes than any of his team-mates, completing the match in each of his 19 appearances.
