Historically Villa Park has brought little joy, never more so than in April when they were thrashed 6-1.
Sunderland have shown some improvement under Gus Poyet but not on their travels. Victories at the Stadium of Light over Newcastle and Manchester City lifted spirits. But consecutive defeats on the road at Swansea, Hull and Stoke mean the Black Cats are bottom again.
At least Wes Brown will be available after his hugely controversial red card last Saturday was overturned by the FA. Lee Cattermole and Andrea Dossena have both completed three-match bans, but can Poyet really risk selecting them again after their hot-headed antics at Hull four weeks ago?
Aston Villa go into the game boosted by their second-half recovery on Monday night when they got a point at neighbours West Brom, despite trailing 2-0 inside 11 minutes. The return of fit-again trio Gabby Agbonlahor, Andreas Weimann and Fabian Delph influenced that turnaround.
The biggest concern for Paul Lambert at the moment is the goal drought of Christian Benteke. It is six games since the Belgian last found the back of the opposition's net.
But, having helped himself to a hat-trick in that 6-1 demolition of Sunderland last season, maybe we shouldn't be too surprised to see his name back on the scoresheet this weekend, prolonging Poyet's pain on the road in the process.

Head-to-head
Aston Villa beat Paolo Di Canio's Sunderland 6-1 in the last meeting in April.
Villa have dominated the home meetings between these clubs, winning 50 of the 81 fixtures (D16, L15).
Sunderland are without a win in their last four games against Villa (D2, L2).
The Black Cats have had a man sent off in each of their last three league trips to Villa Park.

Aston Villa
Aston Villa's clean sheet in their last home game against Cardiff was their first in 17 matches at Villa Park.
The 2-0 win in that game was only Villa's 11th league victory at home in the last 44 attempts.
Villa have only lost two of their last eight Premier League games (W3, D3, L2).
Villa have gained more points from losing positions (seven) than any other Premier League team this season.
Christian Benteke broke the Villa record for goals in a single Premier League season when he took his tally to 18 with a hat-trick against Sunderland in April. He's without a goal in his last six Villa games - his longest barren spell for the club.

Sunderland
Sunderland have the worst away record in the Premier League (D1, L5).
They have only scored two goals on their travels this season. Their last away goal was Steven Fletcher's effort against Crystal Palace on 31 August.
The Black Cats have had just 29 shots on target this season, fewer than any other team in the top flight.
Sunderland made just six tackles against Stoke last Saturday, a Premier League low for the season.
