Sunderland await news on whether goalkeeper Keiren Westwood will be fit after he missed the League Cup win against Southampton with concussion. Wes Brown played in that match and will be hopeful of making his first league start for 22 months. Manchester City playmaker David Silva could be out for up to four weeks with a calf injury. Captain Vincent Kompany remains on the sidelines, while Fernandinho and Matija Nastasic face fitness tests.
If Sunderland thought things might quieten down once Paolo Di Canio had been replaced by Gus Poyet, it seems that they were wrong. Since the Uruguayan took charge his side have played three league games, received two red cards and scored three own goals.
Not unreasonably, Poyet has suggested that his players need to stop shooting themselves in the foot if they are to stay up.
There is cause for optimism though, particularly on home turf, where the win against Newcastle was followed up in midweek by a low-profile victory over Southampton in the Capital One Cup.
Coming on a Champions League night, that victory may have gone under the radar a bit, but it is the first time Sunderland have put together back-to-back home wins in 2013. It's a start.
Manchester City look daunting opposition just now. Goals have been flying in for fun - 23 in their last seven games.
At the same time as the Sturridge/Suarez and Rooney/van Persie partnerships have been vying to be the pundits' pick of the Premier League, Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo have between them scored 15 goals in City's last eight games - that's as many Sunderland's entire squad has scored all season.
Into the last 16 of the Champions League and getting into gear at home, City just need to get themselves into gear on the road. Only the league's bottom four teams and Hull City have worse away records at the moment. Go back into last season and City have lost half of their last dozen Premier League away games.

Head-to-head
Sunderland won this fixture 1-0 at home for the third successive season on Boxing Day 2012, courtesy of Adam Johnson's winner against his former club.
However, Sunderland have only won four of their 18 Premier League games against Manchester City (W4, D2, L12).
There has not been a goalless draw between these clubs in the league since 1938.

Sunderland
Sunderland have scored three own goals this season, which is the same as the other 19 top-flight clubs combined.
The Black Cats have gone 14 matches without a clean sheet.
A quarter of the red cards in the Premier League this season (three of 12) have been awarded to Sunderland players.
Their two red cards against Hull City last weekend marked only the eighth occasion that a team has been reduced to nine men in the first-half of a Premier League game. Sunderland are the only team that this has happened to on two separate occasions.

Manchester City
The seven different goalscorers in their 7-0 win over Norwich equalled the Premier League record for one side in a match.
That result equalled their biggest top-flight win (7-0 v Burnley in December 1968 and 7-0 v Bolton in March 1936).
David Silva has created more chances this season (27) than any other top-flight player.
Manchester City have scored more goals (28) than Sunderland (24) have had shots on target this season.
