Monday marks 100 years since the birth of Shankly and the home fans would see victory over United as the ideal birthday present for the Liverpool legend.

Brendan Rodgers' side go into the game above United in the table after winning their opening two games of the season and they will be looking to set down a marker against the reigning champions.

Rodgers lost both meetings with United last season and breaking his duck against their old foes would be a major boost to their top-four aspirations.

United boss David Moyes has never won at Anfield during his time in charge of Everton and he will be seeking to end that record on Sunday.

United have won their last three league meetings against Liverpool 2-1, with Robin van Persie scoring in both fixtures last season.

Andre Marriner is the man in the middle for what should be as usual a passionate, fiery encounter between England's two most successful club sides.

Liverpool have won both of their games and kept two clean sheets, so the key for them is not to go into the international break on the back of a defeat. That would be two steps forward and one step back for me. I like Daniel Sturridge because he's quick and he can finish and I think he deserves to be in the England squad. We're not blessed with attacking players so he should get a chance. I think both teams would take a draw here and I'm tipping a 1-1 draw in this one.

Liverpool have a number of injury concerns to contend with before Brendan Rodgers finalises his line-up.

Defensive duo Kolo Toure and Aly Cissokho and midfielder Joe Allen picked up injuries during the midweek Capital One Cup win over Notts County.

If Toure fails to recover from his groin problem, Liverpool are hoping that Martin Sktrel will recover from a knee injury to take his place alongside Daniel Agger in the heart of their defence.

Luis Suarez remains absent for Liverpool as he serves the eighth game of his 10-match ban meaning the in-form Daniel Sturridge will continue to lead the attack.

Manchester United face a trip to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, hoping to improve upon an average previous return from this fixture. Of the 82 games played, Red Devils have recorded 23 wins, and Liverpool have come away with 40 victories.

The most recent encounter between these two sides at Anfield was less than a year ago, in September 2012, with Manchester United inflicting a narrow 1 - 2 defeat upon the Reds in a Premier League match.

Head-to-head

Manchester United are chasing a fourth consecutive win against Liverpool. The previous three wins have all been by a 2-1 scoreline.

The Red Devils' victory away to Liverpool last season was their first win in six league and cup games at Anfield.

David Moyes failed to win at Anfield in 12 league and cup games as Everton manager (D7, L5).

Liverpool

The Reds are hoping to win their first three Premier League games for the first time since 1994.

The last time they began a top-flight season with three successive clean sheets was in 2005-06, when they recorded shut-outs in their opening four games.

Daniel Sturridge has scored eight goals in his last seven league appearances.
