It's not inconceivable that they will finish in their highest league position for a decade, which is some achievement. No side has ever previously avoided relegation from the Premier League after losing their first three games of a season; Southampton lost their first four and yet only a mathematician would quibble now with the notion that they are safe with four games still to play.
The change of manager seemed like a fit of pique from an unpredictable chairman at the time, but the transition from Adkins to Pochettino has been seamless and the Saints are currently unbeaten in six games, their best run in the top-flight since Kevin Phillips and James Beattie formed a briefly formidable partnership.
Pochettino is quietly impressive, but the main credit must to go the core of a squad which has grown with the club. Don't forget how far they have come; two years ago this week they were playing Hartlepool in League One. Lambert, Fonte, Lallana, Puncheon and Schneiderlin were all around at that level and do not look out of place now.
West Brom's golden summer and autumn seems a bit of a distant memory; how you judge their season really depends on whether your glass is half full or half empty. If Steve Clarke can guide Albion to end up higher than last season's 10th (they are currently eighth) then it will be their best-placed finish since 1981.
On the other hand, if the season had started along with the calendar year on New Year's Day, then West Brom would now be in the bottom three, ahead of only Reading and Stoke.
Albion's last win in the city of Southampton was on the opening day of the 1969-70 season when the club's then-record signing at £100,000, Colin Suggett, scored twice without reply at The Dell. They have since tried and failed to emulate that victory on 19 occasions.
