Stoke City will again be without defender Robert Huth as he continues his recovery from knee surgery. However, winger Matthew Etherington could be considered for duty after he returned to first-team training following a back injury.Manchester United boss David Moyes has said there are no fresh injuries within his squad following Sunday's 3-0 win at Aston Villa.Darren Fletcher could feature after returning as a substitute in that game.
Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has said he will pick a strong side for the visit of former club Manchester United in the League Cup, despite the pressures of Premier League football on his squad.
The Potters have not progressed beyond this stage of the competition since their class of 1972 lifted the trophy with victory over Chelsea at Wembley - a success that remains the club's only major silverware. However, City are currently 13th in the Premier League table and their top-flight status is imperative, leaving Hughes with a balancing act to keep his squad fresh for a busy festive period.
"I am aware of the fixtures coming up, and the closeness of matches," Hughes said. "This is a game that we want to win, and that will be shown in the team that I select.
"You do have to be conscious of certain things over this period, because you don't want to burn out your players, but at the same time you want to win matches too - whether they be in the Premier League or in the cup competitions."
By contrast to Stoke's sole piece of silverware, United have an impressive League Cup pedigree with four trophy wins and eight finals in total - including back-to-back successes in 2009 and 2010 under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Ferguson's successor David Moyes has only gone beyond this stage of the competition once during his coaching career - with Everton in 2007-08 - but with league and European commitments to consider, the Scot may shuffle the squad from Sunday's 3-0 win against Aston Villa.
"We have a squad of players who can all play in any game," said Moyes. "We have a lot of games coming up and I will see who I think is ready."

Head-to-head
Stoke City last faced Manchester United in the League Cup 20 years ago, beating them 2-1 on home soil in the first leg but losing 2-0 at Old Trafford to go out 3-2 on aggregate.
The Potters have never lost a home cup tie against United, and beat the Red Devils on their run to the 1972 League Cup final.
United have won the last four meetings between the two sides - all of which have come in the Premier League. The last was a 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford in late October.

Stoke City
Stoke City have reached the quarter-finals five times in their history, last progressing beyond this stage with victory against Bristol Rovers en route to winning the competition in 1971-72.
Stoke boss Mark Hughes was a three-time League Cup winner as a player, lifting the cup with Manchester United in 1992, Chelsea in 1997 and Blackburn in 2001.
Hughes' side have faced non-Premier League clubs in their last three ties - beating Walsall, Tranmere and Birmingham to progress to the last eight.
Stoke have lost one of their last seven games, a 4-0 defeat by Everton, and have only been beaten once at the Britannia this season - by Norwich in September.
All four of Kenwyne Jones' goals this season have come in the League Cup, while he has scored eight goals in his last seven appearances in the competition.

Manchester United
Manchester United have lost their last two quarter-final ties, against Crystal Palace and West Ham United respectively.
The Red Devils have won four League Cups - and featured in eight finals. Only Arsenal have lost more League Cup finals than United.
United were the last side to retain the League Cup, winning it in 2009 and 2010.
Current boss David Moyes has only been past the fifth round on one occasion during his managerial career - reaching the semi-finals with Everton in 2007-08.
