Although neither side are being billed as candidates for the drop, defeat at the weekend combined with surrounding results could leave one of them teetering on the brink.Contrastingly, victory at the Britannia would provide either side with the perfect springboard heading into an intense festive period which sees the fixtures come thick and fast.
Mark Hughes' Stoke are five points above the dreaded drop zone and have a challenging time ahead, with a trip to in-form Newcastle leading into a meeting with Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Boxing Day.
The Potters recent form suggests they are full of heart; drawing four and winning two of their last seven outings, albeit lacking defensive gusto, conceding 10 goals in the same period.
Villa's form almost mirrors that of their opponents, with Paul Lambert's men winning two, drawing three and losing two.
Worryingly for Lambert, those two defeats have come in consecutive matches, losing to Fulham and Manchester United in recent weeks, conceding five goals and failing to find the net in the process.
However, with just one point separating the sides, Villa will view Saturday's clash as the ideal opportunity to regain their winning form and leapfrog Stoke.

If the visitors are to buck the trend, striker Christian Benteke will be expected to rediscover the rich vein of form which saw him score 19 Premier League goals last term, with the Belgian without a goal in his last 11 hours and 59 minutes of action.

Stoke City
As the Premier League season gathers pace, Stoke boss Hughes has his resources stretched with four players unavailable.
Defenders Ryan Shawcross and Robert Huth are both missing through injury for the Potters, as is midfielder Matthew Etherington.
On-loan midfielder Stephen Ireland cannot play against his parent club and while Lambert may not have fancied keeping the Republic of Ireland international at Villa Park, he will be glad to see him sidelined considering his recent purple patch.

Aston Villa
Aston Villa boss Lambert will be without striker Gabriel Agbonlahor after he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season, meaning he is subsequently suspended from Saturday's clash.
There is a boost for Lambert however, in the form of Fabian Delph, who returns to action after completing his ban for the very same reason Agbonlahor must now sit out.
Gary Gardner returned to first-team involvement this week having recovered from a back complaint and fellow midfielder Chris Herd should be fit to play after a facial injury, while Villa captain Ron Vlaar remains a major doubt with a calf injury.

Paul Merson's prediction:
I've been disappointed by Aston Villa in the last couple of weeks. They were atrocious against Fulham and then after the opening 10 minutes against Manchester United they weren't good enough.
I'm also starting to wonder if Christian Benteke is a one-season wonder. Stoke didn't do very well against Man United, but I think they may just have enough to win this at home.
