If last season's encounter at The Hawthorns is anything to go by then we could be set for another absorbing West Midlands derby.

This meeting might not match the intensity of a Second City derby between Aston Villa and Birmingham or a boisterous Black Country affair like West Brom versus Wolves, but historically these two are great rivals.

Of course, Albion have already experienced late drama this term with the controversial penalty that enabled Chelsea to snatch a draw before the international break.

That prompted referees chief Mike Riley to apologise to Albion for Andre Marriner's incorrect decision.

The man in the middle on Monday is Michael Oliver, who was at the centre of a contentious penalty award in Hull's match against Tottenham, and will hope for a quiet night.

A win for either side would lift them into the top ten above Swansea.

Aston Villa have failed to score in four of their last five league games, but have also kept three clean sheets in this run and Paul Lambert will be hoping he can find an answer to their problems in the final third of the pitch.

West Brom go into the game in good form having lost only one of their last eight league games to help them climb the table after a slow start to the campaign.

West Brom striker Nicolas Anelka could make his return to first-team action following a spell out.

Anelka, recently sidelined by a groin problem, has missed the last two matches but Albion head coach Steve Clarke has indicated the Frenchman will be available for the Midlands derby.

Clarke is not ruling out winger Scott Sinclair (hamstring) being involved for the first time in six games, while Chris Brunt, Gareth McAuley and Boaz Myhill all look set to feature despite withdrawing from their international squads during the break.

 Head-to-head

The 14 Premier League fixtures between the sides have ended either as draws or 2-1 victories (five wins for Villa, two for West Brom).

West Brom are unbeaten in their last five games against Aston Villa. They have won two of those matches, with the last three ending in draws.

Prior to that run, Villa were unbeaten against the Baggies in 17 league and cup games, a sequence that lasted 26 years.

West Bromwich Albion

The Baggies have lost only one of their last eight league games (W3, D4, L1).

They are looking to record back-to-back home league wins for the first time since February-March, when they beat Sunderland and then Swansea.

They have scored nine of their 12 league goals this season after half-time.
