I have never understood why the Spanish Cup is played in two legs AFTER the La Liga season has started, but that is the situation with this first leg taking place in Madrid. Thanks to Atletico Madrid's surprise Cup win at Real Madrid, it is them and not the more famous team from this city taking on Barcelona for the first trophy of the season.
Atletico Madrid made a very strong start to the new season as they beat Sevilla 1-3 away from home on Sunday. They still look the best of the teams outside of Barcelona and Real Madrid even after selling Falcao and Diego Costa could have another strong season as he looks to push his way into the Brazil World Cup squad for next summer.
It was down to a strong record at home that Atletico Madrid managed to snag the final Champions League place from La Liga. The side won 14 of their 19 home games in the League, although they did lose to both Barcelona and Real Madrid- in fact, Atletico lost their 3 home games against the other Champions League clubs and have won just 1 of their last 6 games here.

There have been changes at managerial level at Barcelona over the summer as Tito Vilanova was forced to step down as boss because of the illness that has affected him. Gerardo Martino has taken over as manager and his side opened up the season with a 7-0 win over Levante on Sunday and remain the strong favourites to retain their title from last season.
Barcelona have earned their place in this Super Cup as Champions of Spain and they will be confident they can win this trophy after falling short to Real Madrid last year. The Catalan club have won the previous 3 times they competed in the competition, although they have failed to win the last 3 away ties in the Super Cup. Barcelona have lost 2 of their last 3 away ties in the Super Cup, including a 3-2 loss in Madrid to Real last season.
The side have lost 1 of their last 7 away games in all competitions and recovered from their heavy loss at Bayern Munich in the Champions League Semi Final by winning 2 of their remaining 3 games on their travels.
