Chelsea also began impressively with an emphatic victory over Southampton, but they were then given a huge fright by Brentford before emerging triumphant after a replay.

Victory over Middlesbrough was followed by a quarter-final against Manchester United, when Rafa Benitez's men won a replay at Stamford Bridge thanks to a spectacular Demba Ba strike.

There are just a couple more obstacles in the way for both teams and it is the one immediately in front of them that could be the greatest challenge, with Wigan Athletic or Millwall lying in wait in the final.

Interim Chelsea manager Benitez may not be staying beyond the summer but he has a chance to sign off in style, with his side fighting for a top-four finish in the Premier League and through to a Europa League semi-final against Basel.

The Blues have just three days to recover from a trip to Russia for the second leg of their European quarter-final against Rubin Kazan, and face a City team in terrific form.

Roberto Mancini's men are destined to finish second in the Premier League despite narrowing the gap on Manchester United top 12 points with a 2-1 success at Old Trafford in Monday's derby.

The victory over United fuelled City's belief that they can bounce back next season and become the dominant force in English football, and they will want to underline their credentials by toppling Chelsea in the FA Cup.

Rafa Benitez may decide to stick with Fernando Torres in attack against Manchester City after he scored in the Europa League game away to Rubin Kazan.

Benitez has regularly rotated his strikers and Demba Ba was ineligible to face Rubin, but he is still recovering from an ankle knock and Torres' form has impressed the interim manager.

Gary Cahill (knee) and Ashley Cole (hamstring) also missed the European clash, along with long-term absentee Oriol Romeu (knee), but Ryan Bertrand could return after an illness.

Chelsea

Holders Chelsea, who are looking to lift the FA Cup for the fifth time in seven years, have qualified for the last four this season after victories over Premier League Southampton, League One Brentford after a replay, Championship side Middlesbrough and 11 times winners Manchester United, again after a replay.

The seven times winners and four-times runners-up are looking for a 12th victory from their 21st FA Cup semi-final.

Blues have beaten 14 of the last 15 Premier League clubs they have encountered in this competition, and have found the net in all 29 FA Cup outings since the 1-0 loss to Barnsley in 2008.

Chelsea will be playing their 12th match at the new Wembley.

Demba Ba is Chelsea's leading FA Cup scorer this season, with three.

Manchester City

The five times winners and four times runners-up are targeting a 10th victory from the 12th FA Cup semi-final in their history.

Straight victories over three Championship clubs - Watford, Leeds and Barnsley - and fellow Premier League side Stoke (fourth round), have landed a fourth trip to the new Wembley for City.

So far in this run Roberto Mancini's side have scored 13 goals (nine in the last two rounds) and conceded none.
City have scored 40 goals in their last 17 FA Cup games, finding the net on each occasion.

They are attempting to win the cup for the second time in three seasons, but also the second in 44 years.

Carlos Tevez is the top scoring Manchester City player in this season's FA Cup, with five goals.
