Chelsea’s interim manager Benítez took the unusual step on Wednesday of revealing the identities of players he planned to rest ahead of the Europa League last-32 second leg against Sparta Prague and Lampard was one of them.
The midfielder’s 10 goals in 16 games have moved him to within three of Bobby Tambling’s all-time club record of 202 and tonight’s match would have provided an ideal opportunity to create more history.
But Chelsea travel to Manchester City on Sunday and Benítez is determined to keep his vice-captain fit for a match that could decide the battle for second place in the Premier League.
“Lampard will not be in the squad tomorrow because we have to manage it a little bit,” Benítez said ahead of the tie Chelsea lead 1-0 from the first leg.
Lampard has opportunities to surpass Tambling’s milestone before his contract expires this summer and Benítez added: “He’ll score more than four or five before now and the end of the season.”
The Spaniard once again declined to comment on the saga that has developed over Lampard’s future but the decision to rest the 34-year-old ahead of a big game underlined just how important he remains to the Chelsea cause.
Benítez had been desperate to give both Lampard and Ramires a break before now, but was unable to do so with Oriol Romeu ruled out for the remainder of the campaign and John Obi Mikel on international duty.
“Six games in three weeks is too much for anyone, even Ramires and Frank,” said Benítez, who confirmed Branislav Ivanovic would also be rested and that Mikel was in line to start following his Africa Cup of Nations triumph with Nigeria.
One man who is set to keep his place is Gary Cahill, who added his voice to those wanting Lampard to stay next season.
“It would be great if Frank is around,” the defender said, admitting he would stop short of lobbying Roman Abramovich to ‘sign him up’. I definitely wouldn’t go up there and say that to him. It’s a decision for the club — it’s not for the players to be involved in. But he’s playing brilliantly at the moment.”
Chelsea (Probable, 4-2-3-1): Cech; Azpilicueta, Cahill, Terry, Bertrand; Luiz, Mikel; Moses, Oscar, Hazard; Torres.
Sparta Prague (Probable, 4-4-1-1): Vaclik; Zapotocny, Svejdik, Holek, Hybs; Kadlec, Janos, Vacha, Matejovsky; Krejci; Lafata.
