The film had its premiere at the 69th Venice International Film Festival in September 2012.....It was first reported in December 2009 that Anderson had been working on a script about the founder of a new religious organization (described as being similar to Scientology) played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman.The project was initially set up with Universal but, like The Weinstein Company, they eventually passed on the project because of problems with the script.The main issue that Universal had with the project was that the budget was too big at about $35 million.It was later reported that River Road was in serious talks to fully finance the film.In February 2011 it was reported that Megan Ellison, daughter of billionaire Larry Ellison, would finance The Master and Anderson's adaptation of the novel Inherent Vice under her new production company Annapurna Pictures.Harvey Weinstein later picked up the worldwide rights to the film in May 2011.Review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 87% of critics gave the film positive reviews.....Paul Thomas Anderson will land the first controversial film of the season, followed by the releases of the Bin Laden-hunting Zero Dark Thirty and QT's Django Unchained. Based in part on the foundation of the Church of Scientology, the film serves as the inaugural release from the production company fronted by Megan Ellison, scion of the software king who wants to restore the days of director- and story-driven filmmaking to Hollywood. Movie Plot Summary:
A 1950s-set drama centered on the relationship between a charismatic intellectual known as "the Master" (Philip Seymour Hoffman) whose faith-based organization begins to catch on in America, and a young drifter who becomes his right-hand man (Joaquin Phoenix).

Storyline:
After returning from the Second World War, having witnessed many horrors, a charismatic intellectual creates a faith based organization in an attempt to provide meaning to his life. He becomes known as "The Master". His right-hand man, a former drifter, begins to question both the belief system and The Master as the organization grows and gains a fervent following.
