Birmingham will be without winger Chris Burke because of a hamstring problem. Forward Jesse Lingard is also ruled out, while the club will monitor midfielder Tom Adeyemi and defender David Murphy. Stoke's Robert Huth is a doubt due to a swollen ankle he suffered against Manchester United. Marko Arnautovic has recovered from the illness that forced him off at Old Trafford, but Glenn Whelan and Andy Wilkinson face fitness tests.
This competition seems to bring out the best in Birmingham City, who were League Cup winners in 2011.
The Blues lie a lowly 19th in the Championship table, just two points above the relegation zone, yet they have scored nine times in their three cup ties this season, and recorded an impressive 3-1 win against holders Swansea in the last round.
Stoke also find themselves just above the relegation zone, although boss Mark Hughes says he is pleased with the performance levels since he took over.
As a player, Hughes won the League Cup with three different clubs - Manchester United, Chelsea and Blackburn.
However, he has yet to reach the final as a manager, with his most successful run coming during his tenure with Blackburn, who reached the semi-finals in 2005-06.

Head-to-head

The sides have never previously met in the League Cup.
The most recent cup encounter saw Birmingham win 1-0 at Stoke in a FA Cup fifth round tie in 2006.
Stoke have failed to score on their last four trips to St Andrew's (D1, L3).

Birmingham City
The Blues have scored 16 goals in their last five matches in the League Cup, although they've also conceded 10 in that period.
Birmingham have won four of their last six League Cup games against Premier League opposition, including that famous 2-1 win over Arsenal in the 2011 final.
They have won three of their last four home games in all competitions, scoring 12 goals in total.
Birmingham City correspondent Colin Tattum takes a look ahead to the match against Stoke City at St Andrew's.

Stoke City
THE OPPOSITION: Stoke may be seven places above Blues, but the gap is only six points. They have lost their last three away matches in the league.
Mamady Sidibe made a goalscoring return from injury for the reserves in midweek.
The last time the Potters reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup was in 2008-09.
Kenwyne Jones has scored four times in his last two League Cup appearances.
It's about performances at this stage and if we keep performing like we have been… we will be ok” Mark Hughes, Stoke manager
