The Chilean replaced Roberto Mancini in June and has spent nearly £90million to bring in Fernandinho, Stevan Jovetic, Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo.

The 59-year-old is hopeful those arrivals can give City the added firepower required to snatch the title back from rivals Manchester United, who opened their campaign with a 4-1 thumping of Swansea on Saturday.

Cheslea and Tottenham also opened their seasons with three points 24 hours later, meaning City will be desperate to follow suit on Monday.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will be hoping for a much improved campaign after briefly flirting with relegation last season.
The Magpies struggled to cope with the added rigours of European football and their eventual 16th place finish was a huge disappointment after ending in fifth the year before.

The summer saw the surprise return of Joe Kinnear as director of football, a move that raised eyebrows among the fans who still remember the 66-year-old's ill-fated first spell in charge in 2008/09, a season that eventually saw the club relegated.

Summer signings Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic could all be handed full debuts by Pellegrini.
Argentina striker Sergio Aguero is also fit to start after overcoming a knee injury.

Defender Matija Nastasic is still sidelined with an ankle injury picked up at the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong last month.

Kinnear was never going to be a popular appointment with the fans after an ill-fated spell in charge of the club in 2008-09, but the lack of summer signings and confusion over his role alongside manager Alan Pardew has intensified the ire.

United's first three home games - against West Ham, Fulham and Hull - represent more inviting fixtures than this opening trip. Newcastle have never won at the Etihad and have a dismal return of two points out of a possible 27 there.
Pellegrini is not without his doubters, who point to his failure to win a trophy in nine seasons in Spain.

That, though, overlooks the fact he took unfashionable Villarreal and Malaga into the Champions League either side of amassing a then-club record 96 points in his only season at Real Madrid. He can hardly be blamed for the fact it still wasn't enough to eclipse Barcelona!

Head-to-head

Manchester City are unbeaten in their last 13 Premier League meetings with Newcastle, winning 11 - including the last seven. City have scored 30 goals during that run, conceding only eight.

Newcastle have never won a league game at the Etihad Stadium (D2, L7).

Manchester City

City kept an unrivalled 18 Premier League clean sheets in 2012-13 and conceded the fewest goals (34).

They were the only team to score in every home game last season.

Yaya Toure has scored three goals in his last three league games against Newcastle.
