Two seasons ago, for example, Blackpool were in the top 10 after 21 games before a terrible run of results saw them gather just 11 more points to finish 19th. They had been as high as eighth at the turn of the year.
Such examples are prevalent in the world's most ruthless division and serve as a regular warning to those who reside in so-called mid-table obscurity that cantering to the end of a season can be a hazardous pursuit.
These tales will surely have been recounted on Wearside lately as Sunderland's stuttering form has started to cast them in the role of this year's potential Blackpool.
As the number of fixtures remaining reaches single digits, supporters study with increasing anxiety the challenges that lie ahead - and for the Black Cats the sight of Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton in the next five weeks seems ominous.
Before that sinister quartet is the visit of Norwich, whose own recent failings have left them slamming on the brakes to halt their own freefall. On 15 December the Canaries were seventh; they've since gathered only eight points in 12 games and sit just above their weekend hosts.
Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill, rather than opt to play down the significance of this fixture, has described it as "a big, big game". The outcome may prove pivotal for both clubs.
Sunderland
  • Sunderland have only taken two points from the last 18 available.
  • They were winless in their last eight league matches last season, falling from eighth to 13th position.
  • Martin O'Neill's side have gained just five points from losing positions - only Fulham (four points) have fared worse.
  • Their next four fixtures after playing Norwich are at home to Manchester United, back-to-back away games against Chelsea and Newcastle, and a home fixture with Everton.
  • Steven Fletcher has scored seven opening goals in the Premier League this season, more than any other player.
Norwich
  • It's just one win in 12 league games for Norwich, although they have only been beaten once in their last six matches (W1, D4, L1).
  • The Canaries have failed to score in six of their last eight league games. They have a league-high six goalless draws this season.
  • QPR were the only side prior to the weekend to have scored fewer Premier League goals than Norwich, who have managed 27.
  • Chris Hughton's side have only earned one point from their last five away matches, and won just one of their last 16 league matches on the road since April (W1, D7, L8).
  • Norwich were awarded their first penalty of the season last weekend against Southampton but Grant Holt's spot-kick was saved.
  • Russell Martin is expected to make his 300th career league appearance.
