Movie Review:
by Emma Dinkins 16 August 2012:A home grown child.
The Odd Life of Timothy Green is the story of a couple who desperately want to be parents and who cannot conceive, they therefore write down all the qualities they would like in a child and he miraculously materializes from their garden with leaves on his ankles as proof he was grown from the ground. All of this is revealed in the trailer and I had serious doubts that there was much more to the film that would make it worth seeing. It was a sweet story and Cindy Green (Jennifer Garner) makes it very clear that there is an underlying sadness that accompanies wanting a child and not being able to have one. The only thing that can fill the void is a child. The performances were very strong and convincing, from Ms. Garner, her husband Jim Green (Joel Edgerton) to the title character Timothy Green played by CJ Adams. And it was perfectly understandable why Timothy would be smitten by Joni Jerome (Odeya Rush), the young lady is absolutely stunning. I wasn't exactly impressed by the acting from Common (Coach Cal) but when I see him on film it usually reminds me of seeing him in concert so I have a fond remembrance, he continues to improve so that's a good thing. Not much to talk about in the special effects category but the reverse rain scene was pretty amazing. I knew that the film wasn't a big special effects driven story it was characterized by the title, but I just expected something more than it delivered. I guess I thought it would be more magical like The Curious Case of Benjamin button, but no such luck there. There were some very touching moments that tugged at your heart and there were moments that focused on the human condition like ailing Uncle Bub (M. Emmet Walsh) and Timothy, the moment of truth situation between Cindy and her employer Bernice Crudstaff (Dianne Wiest), and the reality of kicking the game winning goal. The consequences of various situations proved to be unexpected, but there was nothing that warranted a big screen debut. This film could have easily been on the Disney channel, and I suspect it will be soon. I liked it well enough, and would recommend seeing it as a nice family film. But it is not a must see on the big screen by any means. I give it an amber light.
