The program's host previously starred on NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien for 16 years, then presented The Tonight Show for seven months until Jay Leno's return to his version of The Tonight Show due to the 2010 Tonight Show conflict.Describing itself as a traditional late-night talk show, Conan draws its comedy from recent news stories, political figures and prominent celebrities, as well as aspects of the show itself. The show typically opens with a monologue from Conan O'Brien relating to recent headlines and frequently features exchanges with his sidekick, Andy Richter, and members of the audience. The next segment is devoted to a celebrity interview, with guests ranging from actors and musicians to media personalities and political figures. Shortly after O'Brien's departure from Tonight, the show, along with several of the show's production staff, was nominated for four Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series. In addition to O'Brien serving as host, comedian Andy Richter serves as the show's announcer, and as a sidekick to O'Brien. Jimmy Vivino and the Basic Cable Band, formerly known as "The Max Weinberg 7" and briefly as "Max Weinberg and The Tonight Show Band", serves as the houseband. The show follows the established six-piece format used during Conan O'Brien's tenure as host of The Tonight Show.....On February 22, 2012, TBS renewed the show through April 2014.

After his legendary late-night talk shows on NBC, including Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, and fresh off his 32 cities tour The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour, Conan O'Brien returns to the small screen. Debuting on TBS, O'Brien will host Conan from Mondays to Thursdays, along with his former sidekick and announcer Andy Richter, and his house band: Jimmy Vivino and The Basic Cable Band.
