Shakhter Karagandy coach Viktor Kumykov has confirmed that his team plans to move forward with its tradition of slaughtering a sheep prior to the match against Celtic on Wednesday.
The team killed a sheep last week prior to putting up a 2-0 win in the opening leg of the playoff; the action caused Animal rights group PETA to send a letter to UEFA demanding punishment for the club.
All I can say is that every team and every club has its own pre-match traditions and rituals," said Kumykov according to the Irish Times. "Celtic must have their own. We will try to respect our traditions and those traditions have been in place even before we came to the club."
When asked where he plans to do the animal sacrifice, Kumykov stated, "As far as we know in Scotland the agriculture is very developed so it shouldn't be an issue to find a sheep."
He also played down the impact of the sacrifice on the 2-0 win.
"Of course this tradition may have certain psychological impact on players that can help them to relax before the game," he asserted. "But obviously, what really matters is on the football pitch, the game and the final score and you know we scored twice in the first-leg and Celtic failed to score, that's what really matters."
Regarding his chances of qualifying for the Champions league, Kumykov said, "It won't be a tragedy for us if we don't qualify to the Champions League group stages...As we stated before, the main task was to qualify for the group stage of a European competition and we have achieved this anyway.
