Players to watch
Ahmed Musa – VVV-Venlo
The Nigerian striker will be counted on to provide the scoring punch upfront as the hosts look to threaten the Eindhoven giants. The youngster has already found the back of the net thrice in two appearances and will certainly look to add more to his tally in this difficult encounter.
Dries Mertens – PSV Eindhoven
The pint-sized winger was the second highest assists provider in Eredivisie last season and played an integral role in the 6-1 win over SBV Excelsior. The Belgian ace will look to conjure up a similar kind of performance at De Koel Stadion on Sunday.
VVV-Venlo
Venlose Trots are coming into this match on the back of a demoralising 4-1 loss at the hands of FC Twente Enschede at De Grolsch Veste. The home side staged an impressive show and outplayed VVV in every department on the field.
After finishing 17th in the league table last term, prolonging their stay in Eredivisie by winning relegation/promotion playoffs, the Good Old are still struggling to compete in the Dutch top flight. They are currently placed 15th in the league table and are yet to register their first win of the season.
Glen de Boeck, VVV head coach, is hopeful that his troops will start delivering good performances on the pitch and achieve better results as the season progresses.
PSV Eindhoven
The Boeren are brimming with confidence following their impressive back-to-back convincing wins against ADO Den Haag and SBV Excelsior. The Eindhoven giants performed impressively both at home and away in the aforementioned outings, outclassing both sides comprehensively on the field.
After dominating throughout the 2010/11 campaign, PSV were utterly disappointed to finish third in the league table by the end of the season. Nonetheless, the hefty spending in the summer transfer window has boosted the Eindhoven giants’ hopes of lifting the Eredivisie title this season.
Fred Rutten, PSV manager, has so far remained silent and has not given a single bold statement about his title chances. However, his side’s exceptional performances speak for themselves. Rutten would be looking to secure another convincing win and send a strong message to other title contenders.
Newly acquired Tim Matavz, who joined the Boeren on the final day of the recently concluded summer transfer market from FC Groningen, is expected to make his debut on Sunday for PSV. The Slovenian ace had an impressive 2010/11 campaign and would be hoping to stage a similar kind of performance at Philips Stadion as well this season.
