Sunderland are hopeful of welcoming back the defensive duo of John O'Shea and Wes Brown to face their old club and bolster the centre-back options. South Korea midfielder Ki Sung-yeung deputised at centre-half in Sunday's victory against Carlisle.Manchester United have doubts over Rio Ferdinand's fitness after he limped off with a knee problem against Swansea.
However Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Michael Carrick could all return to David Moyes' line-up.
While their league form has seen Sunderland slump to the foot of the Premier League, Gus Poyet's side has found solace in cup competitions - notably with progress to the final four of the League Cup.
Chelsea were dispatched in the last round after a thrilling comeback, and the way the season has panned out thus far has evoked memories of the last time they reached Wembley in this competition back in 1985.That year Len Ashurst's side tumbled out of the top flight but somehow battled their way to the old Twin Towers before losing to Norwich City - however it was not enough to save Ashurst his job. For Craig Gardner and Sebastian Larsson, this season may also feel like deja vu.
Now key members of the Sunderland squad; both were part of the Birmingham side that beat Arsenal in the 2011 final, but also went on to be relegated into the Championship.
Poyet's mission will be to write a new script for Sunderland, this time with a happier ending.
Manchester United meanwhile have equally pressing concerns, as their FA Cup hopes were ended by Swansea on Sunday and the title race appears to be disappearing out of sight with leaders Arsenal 11 points clear.
David Moyes never won a trophy at Everton, despite leading the Toffees to the FA Cup final, and a major trophy in his maiden campaign at Old Trafford would at least lift that burden.
One boost for Moyes' side is they have already beaten the Black Cats on their home turf back in October, with teenage winger Adnan Januzaj announcing himself as one-to-watch with a brace of goals.
A similar outcome for United would perhaps clear some of the gloom hanging over Old Trafford at present.

Head-to-head
Sunderland have gone 20 games without a win against Manchester United in all competitions.
United's last defeat on Wearside was a 2-1 League Cup defeat after extra-time at the Stadium of Light in November 2000.
David Moyes' United side won 2-1 at Sunderland in October's Premier League encounter.

Sunderland
Sunderland have only reached the final of the League Cup on one occasion, losing 1-0 to Norwich City at Wembley in 1985.
The last time the Black Cats made it to the semi-finals was in the 1998-99 season, where they lost to Leicester City over two-legs.
Gus Poyet's side have won all five of their home ties in both League Cup and FA Cup this season, with four of those inside 90 minutes.
The Wearsiders have had nine different goalscorers for their 10 LC goals - only Connor Wickham (on loan at Sheffield Wednesday) has managed more than one goal.

Manchester United
Manchester United are yet to concede a goal in their three League Cup ties so far.
All of the Red Devils' cup scalps have come against Premier League opposition - Liverpool, Norwich and Stoke.
United are unbeaten in their last seven games away from home, and have won the last three.
Three of Javier Hernandez's five goals this season have come in the League Cup.
