from Melbourne’s Albert Park with the first free practice session of the
year. Join us as we look to explore the talking points and find out who
will be quick – and who looks slow. After a long off-season full of the
usual stories about who looks fast, driver movements and team changes,
it’s finally time to go racing.
Melbourne is one of the best places in the world to watch Formula 1 and once again, the city circuit launches the season as the traditional opening round.
After a recent hot spell, Melbourne has cooled off and there’s a chance of showers across the weekend. However, for today’s practice it looks cloudy and any showers will be fleeting.
Grip levels on the bumpy temporary street circuit will again be low as the circuit takes the usual time ‘rubber in’ with the new season Pirelli tyres. Rookies on debut, a slippery track and cars only run in testing conditions means we will likely see drivers making mistakes and we may see a few offs, damaged cars and red-faced drivers.
For the Australians, Mark Webber will once again be out to shake his home Grand Prix voodoo curse, which has seen him unable to finish higher than fifth place, which he recorded on his debut for Minardi and in 2012 and 2011.
Daniel Ricciardo will also be aiming to impress in his Toro Rosso – he was ninth in 2012 which saw him earn two valuable Championship points.
New regulations are in place, and the unsightly ‘duck-nose’ will mostly be a thing of the past, with most teams running a vanity panel to give their cars a smoother appearance.
This first practice of the year will see drivers adhering to a strict program of a set number of laps as they test new parts which have been rushed from various factories across Europe.
They’ll also be looking to analyse the tyre degradation of the dry compounds of new season Pirelli tyres, while the drivers get into the groove of the tight Albert Park circuit.
After months of preparation and weeks of testing, it is almost time for the 11 teams and 22 drivers that make up the 2013 FIA Formula One World Championship to show just what they can do. Those involved look ahead to the season-opener - the 2013 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s picturesque Albert Park circuit...
