West Brom's 4-2 at The Stadium of Light four months ago took them third in the table as they recorded four consecutive top-flight wins. They were defying all odds and were there on merit. They were always going to hit an uncomfortable run and Steve Clarke will hope that the victory at Liverpool, their first in seven matches, has ended it. The saga over the proposed transfer of Peter Odenwingie certainly didn't help, but they are still five points better off than Roy Hodgson's side were at this stage 12 months ago and have the foundations to better last season's.That's the size of the task ahead for Sunderland. A run of five wins in the last 11 matches has calmed the nerves on Wearside, as they were rising after only two victories in the first 15 of the season. As always with Martin O'Neill they have been strong defensively; coincidentally, West Brom are the only team to score more than three goals against them this season. However scoring goals has been the real frustration, with only 28 in 26 games so far. Steven Fletcher has 10 of those alone, so Danny Graham's arrival should ease some of the burden in time as they aim to look upwards in the table.

Team News:
West Brom head coach Steve Clarke has to decide whether to recall striker Peter Odemwingie, whose attempt to force a move to QPR last month failed.
Defender Goran Popov will serve the second game of a three-match ban for his red card against Tottenham.
Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill could hand a first start to January signing Danny Graham.
Defender Danny Rose is likely to miss out with a hamstring injury, while Lee Cattermole is nursing a knee problem.

Head-to-head
A 4-2 victory at Sunderland in November put West Brom third in the Premier League table and helped them record four successive top-flight wins for the first time since 1980.
West Brom are unbeaten in their last six Premier League meetings with Sunderland (W5, D1).
Seven of the last eight league meetings between the sides have produced a minimum of three goals.

West Brom
West Brom's 2-0 victory over Liverpool ended a run of six Premier League matches without a win.
They have not won at home since beating Norwich on 22 December.
According to Opta stats, West Brom have averaged 1.86 points per Premier League match when Youssouf Mulumbu and Claudio Yacob have both started this season, compared to 0.75 points when they haven't.

Sunderland
The Black Cats are winless in their last three Premier League matches.
Only Stoke (42.6%) and Reading (40%) have recorded a lower average possession than Sunderland (43.3%) this season.
Martin O'Neill's side have only won one of their 14 matches against top-half opposition this season (W1, D5, L8).
