Olympiacos Piraeus visits Anfield to play a preseason charity match against Liverpool to honour Reds and England’s National captain Steven Gerrard.
Liverpool face Olympiakos at Anfield on Saturday in a testimonial for Steven Gerrard. The Greeks were invited because it was against them that the England international scored one of the most stunning and important goals of his career - in a Champions League tie
The Anfield faithful will turn out in force to honour club captain Gerrard. The 33-year-old has ensured his name will rank among the greatest players to have represented the club, after a career spanning over 600 appearances and including the now legendary Champions League triumph in 2005, when he inspired a comeback against Italian giants AC Milan.

His performances in Europe that year also included that sensational last-minute goal against Olympiakos, which completed a win from 0-1 down to 3-1 at the final whistle.

Former Liverpool stars including Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher will also take to the pitch.

"When I was growing up and at the centre of excellence - now called the Academy - I was on year-by-year contracts. I never thought I was going to play for the first team; not until probably the age of 16 or 17. To be sitting here now as captain - it is mind-blowing," Gerrard told the club's website.

"People talk about my loyalty towards the club, but I certainly appreciate the loyalty that the club show me back - offering me a testimonial shows that," he concluded.

Rangers manager Ally McCoist has a number of selection quandaries ahead of Saturday's Scottish League Cup tie at Forfar.

Trialists are not eligible to play in the competition, which means all eight of Rangers' new signings will be unable to feature as they cannot be registered until 1 September due to a transfer embargo.

Cammy Bell, Nicky Law, Nicky Clark, Arnold Peralta, Bilel Mohsni, Jon Daly, Steven Smith will therefore have to sit out this first round encounter.

And Emilson Cribari, Ross Perry and Kyle Hutton have all been ruled out of the tie due to injury.

Sheffield Wednesday

• Sheffield Wednesday survived for a second season in the Championship after promotion from League One in 2012, finishing four places and four points above the relegation zone.

• Dave Jones's side failed to score in 16 of their 46 Championship games last term - no club exceeded that.

• The Owls have lost an opening day fixture only once in eight seasons (2007).

Nottingham Forest prepare to entertain Huddersfield Town at City Ground on Saturday afternoon,

The most recent encounter between these two sides at City Ground was less than a year ago, in February 2013, with Nottingham Forest annihilating their visitors 6-1 in a Championship match.

Defender Jonathan Hogg, signed from Watford for an undisclosed fee, is likely to make his debut and Adam Hammill is hoping to start following his arrival from Wolves. The winger spent four months on loan with Huddersfield last season.

Doncaster Rovers will play against Blackpool on Saturday August 3, 2013 (8/3/2013) for English League Championship at 10:00 AM (New York time).

Doncaster Rovers

• Doncaster are making an immediate return to the Championship, after relegation in May 2012.

• Rovers are starting a new league season with a home game for the first time in six years.

• Paul Dickov is one of four managers in the Championship at a new club, six months after parting company with Oldham.

Blackpool

• This is Blackpool's third Championship campaign since their one season in the Premier League.

• The Seasiders made a three-match winning start to last season's league campaign.

• They are starting away from home for the fifth consecutive season and it is nearly five months since they won an away game.

Watford boss Gianfranco Zola will be hoping his side can shake off last season's play-off final disappointment.

Zola has been busy strengthening his squad following their Wembley defeat to Crystal Palace as he looks to mount another promotion challenge.

A number of last season's loanees from Granada and Udinese, including Joel Ekstrand, Ikechi Anya, Cristian Battocchio and Daniel Pudil, have all agreed to a permanent switch.

AFC Ajax

Ajax go into this home game with the success of the Johan Cryff Cup win over AZ Alkmaar fresh in their memory. Frank de Boer has 3 titles under his belt with his coaching time at Ajax and you would be a brave person if you didn’t think he could do it again this season.

AFC Ajax are now in domestic ascendancy, there has been some blood letting over the recent seasons, gone are the big spending on foreign players in the transfer market, going back to a 4-3-3 formation, no mass exodus of star players.

The only blemish is the loss of Derk Boerrigter to Celtic for €2.1M, and a possibly imminent move for Danish International Eriksen to either Liverpool or Borussia Dortmund.

De Boer has said he wants him to stay, but indicated he would not stop him from taking up the next step in his footballing career.
Ajax have picked up a great defensive signing in Holland under 21 van der Hoorn from Utrecht for € 3.8M, and 22 year old loanee striker Bojan from Barcelona.

Roda JC Kerkrade

Roda JC had a horrendous last season, but scrapped through the relegation playoffs to survive the drop and stay in the Eredivisie for another season.

In the transfer market they have been rather quiet, but there is a fresh look about them as they offloaded some of the squad for free, the exception being Syrian Sanharib Malki to Turkish side Kasımpaşa for € 1.5M.

The money (to date)has not been spent on new players as all recruits are on loan or have been a free transfer.

Roda’s pre-season form has been patchy, losing to some unspectacular opposition, but they did manage to capture the scalp of Schalke 04 reserves in a 3-2 win on the 13th July.
