The Spurs were a quick riser last season, joining perpetual giants Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal, and Manchester City in the race for one of the four Champions League spots awarded by the Premier League. In and out of the top four until the last fixtures of the season, the Spurs have only one goal in mind for the new season: CL qualification. After a flurry of transfer activity around Europe, let’s look at how Hotspur line up for the upcoming season.

Its been just about 2 months since we witnessed the stunning Gareth Bale strike that brought down the curtains on the Premier League Season. The Barclays Asia Trophy brings the contestants of the final day clash at White Hart Lane back together this Wednesday.

Paulo Di Canio has ensured that the build-up to this clash remains gripping with a series of signings that has made Sunderland the busiest Premier League club in the Transfer market.

Vito Mannone looks set to take the spot between the sticks, vacated by the Merseyside bound Simon Mignolet. Di Canio has not found a replacement for Danny Rose, who returns to Tottenham following his year-long Loan spell. Phil Bardsley's fall out with the Italian manager further complicates the problem and midfielder Jack Colback has to fill in an unfamiliar Left back position. John O'Shea is an obvious choice at Right back.

Di Canio has wealth of options for the Centre back positions, with incoming Modibo Diakite and Valentin Roberge providing competition to Carlos Cuellar and Wes Brown. Di Canio would look to build a soild partnership between Cuellar and Diakite for the upcoming season.

El hadji Ba, David Moberg, Cabral and Giaccherini come in the squad brimming with talent in the midfield department. Di Canio would prefer a 4-2-3-1 system with Seb Larsson and Craig Gardner holding the midfield together. Cabral could provide options with his versatility to fill in as a Defensive midfielder or as a centr half. Ba and Moberg look to be signings for the future.

With Giaccherini not having joined the squad yet, Di Canio would go with the attacking trio of Adam Johnson, Stephane Sessegnon and James McClean behind a lone striker. Larsson can play on either wing in case Cabral takes up the holding Midfielder position. Highly impressive during the Confederation Cup, Giaccherini could play an important role in Sunderland's season.

This match will be 1st round of 3rd elimination tour in UEFA Champions League.

Celtic v Elfsborg Football Match will be played on 31.07.2013 in Celtic Park (Glasgow) for a UEFA Champions League match. Manuel Jorge Neves Moreira de Sousa will be the referee for this match.

Here is the words of Celtic manager Neil Lennon and Elfsborg boss Jorgen Lennartsson.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon: “They are the Swedish champions with international players, full-time obviously and 17 games into their season so they are match-sharp,” he said.
“They are a good, very well-organised side who pass the ball very well.
“There is a good mixture of youth and experience in their team and they are obviously off the back of winning the title so they come into this season confident.
“I think they are probably putting more emphasis on qualification into the Champions league than their progress in the league, so they are a very dangerous opponent.
“It is a concern that the longer the game goes on we might tire a little bit quicker than they will but I think we have enough quality on our side to give them enough problems.”

Elfsborg boss Jorgen Lennartsson: “We have been looking forward to the Champions League since we won the Swedish league last year on 6 November.
“But we feel we are big underdogs. We know Celtic is a good side but we feel we have a wonderful situation because we feel we can play totally without pressure, all the pressure is on Celtic.
“We know that they have already won their domestic league before it has started – almost – so the Champions League is very important to Celtic.
“So we feel it is a wonderful situation for us and we like that very much.”

The international friendly match of Walsall vs Aston Villa rolls the grass of the Bescot Stadium on 07-31-2013 at 19:30 UK.
Paul Lambert’s debut season in charge of Aston Villa wasn’t one which the Holte End faithful will want to repeat in a hurry, but which ended with signs of promise from the former Norwich manager’s youthful charges. Certainly, Villa were too close for comfort where the relegation places were concerned and though Lambert’s youngsters at times appeared ready to let themselves fall below the surface – most notably in a humiliating defeat at Stamford Bridge by Chelsea – they fought for their lives and their late season form gives cause for optimism heading into 2013-14. From the outset, questions were asked as to whether Lambert knew exactly what he was doing: Why such faith in unproven youngsters? Why the apparent unwillingness to use experienced guys like Shay Given and Richard Dunne? And why was Darren Bent, who lest we not forget cost £24million from Sunderland in January 2011, no more than a substitute? Christian Benteke proved a resounding answer to the latter. As the season progressed, the good football that Lambert was preaching began to become more noticeable, and the Villains always carried a goal threat, particularly in Belgian international Benteke who helped himself to 19 league goals. Additionally, young players such as Ashley Westwood, Andreas Weimann and Matthew Lowton, began to show that they belonged in the top-flight, Defensively, goalkeeper Brad Guzan excelled in 2012-13, but the rest of the side were found wanting, as a dismal 69 concessions in 38 matches will attest: Indeed, only relegated Wigan and Reading conceded more. That must be improved upon in the coming campaign and whilst captain Ron Vlaar and Lowton are unquestionably first-choice, the other two places remain up for grabs. All-in-all however, Villa appear in stronger health than this time last year, following a tumultuous 12 months.

Bayern Munich play Sao Paulo in the second Audi Cup semi-final per-season competition at the Allianz Arena following Man City v AC Milan.
There is no better way to prepare for the season than facing some of the top clubs in the world, and that is exactly what Bayern Munich continues to do this summer.

After facing a number of squads in July, including Barcelona, the Bundesliga club will host the 2013 Audi Cup, a four-team tournament with representatives from four elite leagues.

Manchester City and Milan will compete on one side of the bracket, while Bayern Munich takes on Sao Paulo of Brazil.

Every match is certain to be exciting, so make sure you do not miss a minute of the action. Here is a look at the second of the two opening matches between the host and the challengers.Speaking to journalists in Munich on the eve of the competition, Man City Coach Manuel Pellegrini said his team would try their best to win the tournament.

AC Milan’s coach Massimiliano Allegri said his team were looking to use the tournament to improve their pre-season form, saying their performance against their rivals would demonstrate how prepared they are for the year ahead.

Host Pep Guardiola, who is about to start his first season at German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, said he was looking forward to having his complete team together soon.

Bayern signed Goetze from Borussia Dortmund at the end of the last season in a deal put at 37 million euros by German media.

Asked about speculation that Bayern were making a bid for Chelsea defender David Luiz, Guardiola said the rumours were simply not true.

The Audi Cup will take place on Wednesday (July 31) and Thursday (August 1).

Manchester City play AC Milan in the semi-final of the Audi Cup at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday before Bayern Munich play Sao Paulo in the second semi-final.

The two day tournament will also feature Bayern Munich and Sao Paulo and will take place in the Allianz Arena in Munich.

City won the Barclays Asia Trophy this week in a 1-0 victory over Sunderland.  Edin Dzeko, who new manager Manuel Pellegrini is giving a second chance to at the club, scored the decisive goal and will hope to impress again on Wednesday evening if selected.

City’s new manager said in the aftermath of the victory:  ”I thought we gave a good performance. It’s important in a friendly match to improve and we have improved here in Hong Kong from South Africa.

“I’ve given minutes to all the players. I make changes not because the players are playing good or bad but because I want to give them minutes.

“At least we are trying to play in the right way. This pitch was not easy, but we did well.”

New signing Jesus Navas, who was a second half substitution in the Sunderland game has spoken recently about his excitement ahead of the new campaign.

The ex-Sevilla winger told City’s official website:  ”It’s an exciting time to be joining City and I’m confident we will enjoy the season and do great things together.

“Obviously I know Alvaro well. He was a team-mate of mine at Sevilla and he scores lots of goals. I’m very pleased to see him following me to City.

“For me, it was very clear what I wanted to do. I wanted to join City. Both Alvaro and I were convinced that City is a great club to join.

“We want to try to recreate the partnership in the Premier League. But really it’s a team effort – it will be down to all of us if we are going to be successful.

“I know my place isn’t guaranteed – I always knew that coming here,” he said. “I know I face a big challenge but I’m here to give 100% and not take it for granted that I will always be in the team.

“Of course, we all know we have to earn our places in the team. It’s definitely going to be exciting and fun to watch. But the most important thing is to win the games we play and be successful.”
