Montella’s side has the chance to condemn another team to relegation as 18th placed Palermo will visit them on Sunday. The Sicilians need a victory to keep their chances alive, but I’m sure Fiorentina will have other plans.

Fiorentina’s second best scorer Adam Ljajic will sit this one out as he’s suspended and so will injured midfielder Alberto Aquilani who’ll be replaced by Fernandez.

Palermo (18th W6 D14 L16)


Palermo had a good chance to stay in touch with Genoa, but in-form Udinese inflicted their second consecutive defeat after the one against champions Juventus and the Sicilians are now with one foot in Serie B.

The Sicilians showed a lot of determination equalizing twice, but Mehdi Benatia’s 83th minute finish saw Palermo slump to a defeat which leaves them four points from safety with two games left.

It is mission impossible for Palermo from now on, they have to pick up all points in Firenze after having failed to win 21 of their last 22 away games in Serie A and will need Genoa to pick up not more than one point in their remaining games.

Palermo will travel to Firenze without midfielder Edgar Barreto, but Donati is back after serving a one match suspension and will take his place in the Rosanero midfield.

The Betting Verdict

This is Fiorentina’s last home match of the season, so they’ll want to leave a positive impression (if that is still possible after failing to secure a podium finish) with a win over strugglers Palermo.

Palermo on the other hand will have to go all out for a victory, but what’s frustrating is that they can say still relegate at the end of this round even in the unlikely event of a win in Firenze if other results go against them.

The odds are quite short for the home win if we assume that the motivation factor will play an important role in this game, as I mentioned before Palermo are playing with their backs against the wall.

Fiorentina holds a solid home record, but Palermo has not lost any of their last seven games by more than a goal, they’ve actually only lost two of their last 18 games by a two or more goal margin (against Napoli and Milan).

Therefore, I’ll back Palermo to keep this close and say goodbye to Serie A with their honor intact

Genoa are unbeaten in their last five Serie A games and a victory against Inter Milan at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris would secure their presence in the upcoming Serie A season.

Last time out Genoa played out a 0-0 draw at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin after a dull encounter with hardly any chances of note, but after all it was a result that seemed to have satisfied both teams.

They will now return to Genoa and will try to record a second successive home win after the solid 4-1 win over relegated Pescara. It’s not an unrealistic objective, Inter is in deep trouble at the moment.

Coach Ballardini doesn’t have important absences to worry about, Boriello and Floro Flores will be favored up front once again.

Inter Milan (8th W16 D5 L15)


Inter Milan suffered another defeat on Wednesday at the Giuseppe Meazza, this time against Europa League chasing Lazio in a match that ended 3-1 for the guests.

The result leaves Inter in eight position on 53 points, which means that for the first time in 15 seasons the Nerazzurri will not be present in any continental competitions.

Inter Milan will now try to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat on the road against Genoa, but it will be hard to do it with a crippled squad and no confidence whatsoever.

The good news for coach Stramaccioni is that Cassano could return to the starting line-up, but there are 15 other absences, 10 of which could have been starters. Defenders Juan Jesus and Alvaro Pereira are both suspended for this match, which means that Stramaccioni may have to improvise with Cambiasso in defense.

The Betting Verdict

This is as good of a chance as any for Genoa to secure their presence in the upcoming Serie A season, playing at home against an Inter Milan side that has never been weaker.

We just have to take a look at Inter’s defense for this match to realize that the Nerazzuri are very unlikely to avoid defeat in Genoa. Benassi, Chivu, Cambiasso and Pasa should not offer too much protection for goalkeeper Handanovic.

I can’t see past a home win in this one, I expect Genoa to pile on Inter’s misery, at this point the Nerazzuri just want to get over with these two remaining games and start preparing for the upcoming season.

Whether it was the hapless Heurelho Gomes bursting into tears there in Juande Ramos' last match in charge (Gareth Bale and Michael Dawson were sent off in that game), or the sight of White Hart Lane reject Matthew Etherington celebrating a double in last season's defeat (Younes Kaboul saw red in that one); Spurs have not had much fun in the Potteries.

It wasn't much fun for them back at the Lane in December either as they played out a nondescript goalless draw. Back then Stoke were on an unbeaten run which was to stretch to 10 games; without that peak in November and December Tony Pulis' side would now be in dire trouble.
I saw them lose to Manchester United last month and, notwithstanding the opposition, it was about as grim a display as I have ever seen from a Stoke side under Pulis, who deserves enormous credit for getting his team to take seven points from the three games since.
Such is the congestion in the bottom half of the division that Stoke's late flurry of form means they are now only two points off 10th place and as a result could yet finish in the top half of the top division for the first time since 1981. That would be great on paper, but Pulis and his bosses know the reality: that it's been a long, tough season at the Britannia.

"It's been a wonderful season but it's not finished yet. We would love to go out and win on Saturday now and hopefully Celtic can do us a favour.

"Hopefully we can do it in front of our home supporters and get that European place."

Dundee United forward Rory Boulding: "We don't have much to play for anymore in the league. But we've got a new manager in and I've got everything to play for in terms of impressing him and showing that we want to be part of his plans next season.

"I'm only contracted to the end of this season, so I will have to find out about my future soon.

"I've got these two games left to put down a marker. It would be good to get a few minutes in both matches and show the manager I'm worth another deal.

"If you believe in your own ability, then you know you will get a club somewhere and that you will be playing next season. But it would be nice to stay here as it's such a big club.

"In the top six, you are playing the best teams week in, week out and it makes for difficult fixtures. With the amount of changes we have been having in the squad, it's made it even more so."

Chelsea

Chelsea have scored more headed goals (16) than any other team in the Premier League this season.

The Blues are second in the Premier League form table (W5, D2, L1) behind Arsenal. Villa are third (W5, D1, L2).

However, Chelsea have lost three of their last six games on their travels.

Ramires' midweek goal against Tottenham took his league tally to five, all of which have come at Stamford Bridge. Two of those goals were in the reverse fixture against Villa.
